I have a Dimarzio FS-1 I'd like to have unwound a bit to make it less hot. Anyone know who would be able to do something like that? I guess the soldering of the leads is the tricky part?

Duncan Custom shoppe can. it CAN be done yourself, though I don't recommend it if you've never done it before. The tricky part isn't soldering the leads, The Tricky part is not breaking a wire thats thinner than human Hair.....an man if you do break it, good luck finding where it broke.

a big ol' yup to that.
the sd custom shop will rewind anything that is non-potted or wax potted. i assume that the fs1 (cool pup by the way) is wax potted. my fs1 is about 13k, how far do you want it down?

I was thinking of taking it down to 8-9k, maybe more like a Twangbanger.
I agree, the FS-1 is a fantastic pickup, but sometimes i think I lost a bit too much crispness in the highs.

If it's 13k, it's way more than likely wound with 43 gauge wire, which is thinner. Taking it down to 8-9k would put it in vintage land, equivalent to about 6.5-7k with 42 wire, which is what they use on the Twangbanger.
If you're just trying to add a little sparkle without messing with the output too much, I'd shoot for 10.5-11.5k. That would roughly be the 43 equivalent of Twangbanger range.

Now I just need someone to do it...I have to check on the wax potting issue. If it is wax potted, can't I just put it on a tray in a low temp (160 degree) oven to melt the wax off?

The wax won't melt off, it will soften. You need to take off as much as you can while it's soft. When it cools you have to heat it again. The wax pot is a lot easier for that than an oven, plus a lot of ovens don't have very tight "tolerances" for their heating range. You could have it set at 140 and it might actually be 170 or more, meaning the plastic might melt or warp.
