Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

I've always like Aldrich's sound dating as far back as his albums with the band Lion. I know you said studio sound, but it's tough to ignore Aldrich's live sound with Whitesnake. I'd love to see those guys in concert, as their live DVD released a couple years ago is probably my most watched music DVD.

Whitesnake and Judas Priest are going to be within a 30 minute drive for me this Sat night and I cant afford a ticket.... WAH!!!!!!! Priest is performing British Steel in its entirety and then other classic... Ive never seen either band..

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Sykes for the sake of hard rock/metal history he wrote on that Les Paul especially 1987.That said Doug is a F@#$ING AMAZING GUITARIST

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Well, Ive not heard any studio recording that Aldrich has done, and all my fav snake songs were done by Sykes I think.. (did sykes cut Here I go again?) Anyhow, Slow and easy , love and no stranger, here I go again and the songs off that record are my fav snake stuff.

Yes, all of those songs are from the '87 Whitesnake self titled album that has Sykes on guitar. But the solo for "Here I Go Again" was the only solo NOT done by Sykes. That solo was cut by the other guitarist Adrian Vandenberg.

...........Sykes was fired shortly after recording the album. :guilty:

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Hmm , I was thinking slow an easy was from Slide it in.?? But thanks for the info on the solo for here I go.. I didnt know Vandenberg was that good.

I thought I had heard that Sykes recorded the Whitesnake album, but didnt tour for it. Why was he released?

David Coverdale didnt think Sykes was "Hair Metal" enough for the "new" whitesnake he wanted to put together; so he was fired and Vivian Campbell was hired to take his place......I guess when you're the lead singer, you can do that.

and when Sykes joined Whitesnake, they re-recorded the "Slide it in" album for US release (late '85). Before it had only been released in the UK ('84) and Sykes didnt play on that one.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Actually, Sykes' firing was when both Campbell and Vandenberg were brought in...with the exception of that one solo, Sykes recorded all the guitar tracks on the Whitesnake album, except for one other clean rhythm track done by Dan Huff, IIRC...

Well then they must have re-recorded the solo to "here i go again," because I know Vandenberg played that solo. And today, when Whitesnake plays near where Vandenberg lives, he joins them on stage for "here i go again" and plays that solo.

Yes, as I mentioned, from everything I read he was brought in to do that particular solo and Dan Huff did some miscellaneous rhythm track. Everything else - Sykes.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Sykes also said he used an 80's Charvel super strat on several tracks on the '87 album. On the solos to "Children of the night," "Bad Boys," and "Still of the night" he used it because you can hear a lot of whammy bar stuff.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Yep, that he did. Both he and Aldrich are super nice guys I've had the pleasure to meet, and both will talk you ear off about their gear if you ask them nicely. :D

Sykes's 'whitesnake' tone sounds like he has his mids cranked, and Aldrich's 'whitesnake' tone sounds like his mids are a tad scooped and treble is rolled off a hair.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Can't imagine a Mesa Mk III (what he used on that album, and I coincidentally own) with the mids fully cranked, but I kinda get what you mean. I will say I teched for Aldrich on a one-off gig a couple of summers ago (he let me play his black LP custom and his Tom Murphy-aged standard), and he had a Tim Caswell-modified Marshall that was the coolest and strangely Boogie-esque sounding Marshall I have ever heard.

wasnt hair metal enough? I guess due to his preference of Les Pauls?? Wonder why vandenburg was A) brought in to do the solo B) let go from the band?

It was Mesa's first tri-channel amp, came out in the mid-80s. Great cleans, and fairly decent mid-gain channel "dubbed the 'Marshall' channel, but not quite...and the lead channel is just insane. More aggressive sounding than the MK II, and more character than the MK IV, IMO. Mine's the last in the series, the "red-stripe" era, and it's fully loaded with the Simul-Class power section, Graphic EQ and Reverb. His was the Colosseum (300-watt!) version from the same era, as I recall when we compared...(told him I had one, he was like "Aren't they GREAT??" :D )
Aldrich's action is indeed low, but not so super low you don't still get the 'snap' off the string, but yeah, they both played like a dream...I still have the diagram I did of his pedal board around here somewhere...

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Aldrich is a technically great soloist but his creative mind and songwriting is no match for John Sykes.

And tone? Both have had good tones, but Sykes can write an album, while Aldrich is a great lead player and sideman. I'm not bagging him at all because I like him, but compare the albums he's written to the ones he's filling in on.

True. Didnt Sykes write like 90% or the "Whitesnake" album?

My guess is your guess........Him playing LP's. In '87 I can only name a hand full of players that were on a LP and not a shred stick..........Slash, Steve Clark, and Sykes. I wouldn't call Slash, Steve or Sykes a 'Hair Metal' player; I consider them (as players and writers) to be more 'hard rock' than 'glam rock'.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Something else ive noticed that is different between sykes and aldrich is that Aldrich slings his LP's down pretty low (like Jimmy Page)......but Sykes wears his LP pretty high.
