This poll is worthless without a Marsden/Moody option!

who r those guys?

Are you having a laugh?
Whitesnake's best songs were back around the early days with Marsden and Moody.
Yeah, I like what Sykes did a lot, and Aldrich is an archetypal rock God, but the songs were better way back when.
"Saints and Sinners" is awesome.

"Here I Go Again" was a Marsden/Coverdale song BTW.

Aldrich. He got some of the best rock tones I've ever heard on Forevermore.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

oh my god no competition John Sykes has one of the best tones ever recorded by man

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

exactly! where is vai?
And yeah - where the hell is Mick Moody? Mick to me is the real classic whitesnake sound.
It all went hair when john lord left and when vandenberg, vai and all those guys got brought in.
After that period, whitesnake just became a whitesnake tribute band.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

If you're talking about Whitesnake, Sykes gets my vote. Blue Murder is really just Whitesnake without Coverdale if you ask me, and I really like his tone a lot. However, Aldrich seems to be able to work with anyone and meld into the feel of the song. I've heard him with Whitesnake, Dio, John Waite, etc. He holds up his end quite well in any case. So, I guess I'm not really picking a favorite here.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

If that's any indication, I have both Aldrich pickups, the neck in one guitar, the bridge in another.

I agree that the neck sounds better to my ears than the bridge. The neck is so liquidy (if such a word exists) whereas the bridge is kinda harshly EQed and with a significant focus on the mids.

I still like it a lot in the guitar it went in but it is harder to match it to guitars than the neck which seems to sound great wherever it goes into...

That railroading aside, Sykes seems to get a systematically better tone in his own bridge runs...

Wait, so here do I stand?!?!?

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

This is a really hard question. 2 of my favorite players of all time.

I have to go with Sykes

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

If Doug Aldrich would cut it out with the over-use of his stupid wah pedal these days, I'd be hard pressed to find a hard rock player to surface post 1985 that I like better.

But Sykes is a legend. Total command of his instrument, even in his early 20s.

this guy hit the nail on the head. how fast did they tank after Sykes? you can only go so far on flash, big hair cutey pie pictures with sherrif badges may sell but the next albumn wasnt the same and then......and then.......presto- poof- gone-then off bailed the hired mercenaries from the sinking ship becouse they never were a real band together, and the songs on the next albumn reflected that fact. they were just around to rake in a few tours before it all went bust. Coverdale owns the rights to the name I'm sure and Vai could cover the Sykes leads but not his song writeing ability. thats why these technique scoobies that play a million miles an hour never go anywhere, cuz they usually cant write so they just become hired guns. I like Vai, dont get me wrong, but he writes like Vai and it doesnt sound like Sykes

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

i think Vai was one of the worst things to ever happen to Whitesnake. His style was awkward in the band.

Slip of the Tongue was (aside from one or two tracks) a terrible album.

you know come to think of it, Fool for your luvin no more-had weird Vai guitar fills that didnt sound very bluesy like Sikes guitar fills-I can see what your saying, even the solo seemed kinda out of place for the Whitesnake style of yesteryear. I thought Vai's playing on Eatem and Smile was fantastic and I talked to Gregg Bissonette about it a few years ago and he told me Vai and Billy Sheehan would work out really cool riffs and Dave would come in and say......keep this or that, and change this or that around like this, and they did the whole albumn really fast and it came right together fairly easy. With Whitesnake it just didnt seem to work as well-I dont know why

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

WS is, at its core, a heavy blues rock band. Even when they were going full on hair metal for their visuals their music was blues based. Vai is the opposite. When I heard he joined I thought it would be strange..I think I was correct.
