Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

My amps have enough gain so if there's ever something missing it's the pickups/tubes that I start adjusting. Everyone else I see using a dual rec has an overdrive boosting it but it works much better in the mix with all the frequencies present. I use an attenuator and KT-77s

I hear you bro !

Then you get guys like Zakk Wylde, who not only use his sig OD to boost the amp, but also use super hot EMG's to even further compress that allready hot-rodded Marshall of his.

COMPRESSION CITY !

. . . seems that i am in the minority when it comes to the unmolested gain tone of my amps.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I guess it's all about application. If I had the luxury of a massive setup with several amps to switch between and a crew, or even a car for that matter, to lug it all around I totes would. I take the train everywhere, it's a big enough hassle to carry one guitar and a pedal case. The thought of carrying even my Blues Jr with the guitar and pedal case, while doable, gives me schlep phobia. That's why most people do it, I don't think it has much to do with tone preference.

Guitar->pedals->amp

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

No need for one on Ch.3 of my 5150III 50w but I do use one every once in a while on Ch.2, which is rare since I hardly ever leave Ch.3. One of the reasons I like the amp so much is that it's the first high gain amp I've owned that I didn't need to add an OD in front to tighten, compress and saturate it a bit.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

Since I own a Recto I picked up an OD808 just to see what all the hype was about and while I can understand why some people might prefer that sound I dislike how it kills the dynamics and sensitivity of the attack.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

Gotta use em like mustard. Too much and the bread gits mushy.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I use a big Fender amp for doom metal, so dirt comes with the territory as much as black shirts and devouring fetuses.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I like the sound of My keeley modded RatII so I use it in the overdrive setting. most bands I listen to use a dirt pedal, like Melvins etc so I am in good company ;)

sometimes I use it, or my fuzz pedal or another amp setting

I use mine on the Recto green channel at times, to give me another more bluesy overdrive in between the clean and the gain channels. Sounds kind of like the "pushed" setting on green but without having to go over to the amp and flip it, or adjust volume.

I honestly have no idea where that comes from, the idea of them being 'super hot'.
Maybe back in the day they were among the hottest pickups around, but not even close anymore.
Compared to some of the highest output pickups on offer today, the EMGs are more 'medium hot' output on a wider scale.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I use whatever the situation calls for...

If I am playing at low volumes my pedal choices often differ from what I'd use at higher volumes where I can crank my amp(s).

That said, not all OD pedals offer a tight compressed sound...

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I use a Boost/OD with my SLO (mainly on the crunch channel) but not at all with my Splawn Quick Rod. It's quite compressed sounding on it's own, and I'm yet to find a pedal I actually like the sound of with this amp.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

As many have stated here, a lot of times the necessity of OD/Distortion pedals is dictated by the volume you I can plan at and the amp itself.

With my Triaxis/2:90 rig I don't use an OD because of how much gain it has and also because I can get a volume boost by switching channels. (I usually have a dedicated channel for leads) For my Blackstar HT-5, I usually use a Tubescreamer for solos, mostly because it doesn't have the gain structure that the Triaxis has. Also, if I'm playing very low with the HT5 (which I have to sometimes) I'll have to use the Tubescreamer for extra gain.

All that being said, the Tubescreamer, and other ODs, ad a little character/harmoics/something something to my leads that I do like. Despite the gain of the Triaxis, I do miss the Tubescreamer slamming it for leads at times.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I use my pedals for the tones that my TSL doesn't do well, not for boosting the gain channels.

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

I plug up my DOD Grunge pedal in front of everything.. Man, it slays. you should hear how it brings my Quick Rod to life....

I kid. I thought I already replied to this thread, but for some reason, I dont see it. With my quick rod, I dont use any OD. I do use an MXR Eq with the mids pushed up alil for leads to make it stand out alil more. With my JCM 800 ill use a tube screamer. Id love to try a rat pedal sometime. I remember years ago, a bud I had used a JCM800 and a rat and his tone was amazing

Re: Who does not use an OD pedal to boost their amps ?

very relevant thread for me ....today and yesterday i was in a studio tracking guitars. I got a nice basic guitar tone by cranking my princeton...that was no surprise. But for the massive heavy parts i wanted to add, i had the full intention of using a big muff thru a twin....however, it the end after trying some different axes, amps and pedal sounds and listening to the monitors, just the sound of the twin cranked to 7 or 8 (depending on the guitar) sounded epic (thank god it was in its own soundproofed room!), so all pedals were ditched. 9 tunes, 30 (ish) guitar tracks and not even a hint of a pedal! :)
...there is no way i can pull those sounds off live tho without peeling paint off the walls and causing irreperable harm to myself and the audience, so it will be back to overdrive pedals and stuff for that.

ps...you guys will get to hear the tracks im talking about after nov 6...

I can totally understand if you use fuzz boxes on a vintage non-master volume amp to get those sludgy DOOM tones, because there is NO gain knob to turn, on the amp.
