Re: Who has done the big downsize/upgrade?
I'm actually planning a big downgrade but the problem is once you live with gear for a long enough time each little piece has its own history. The sentimental value I think makes it hard to part with some other stuff you wouldn't otherwise need or want to.
For example, I have a twelve string acoustic that I've strung with just 6 strings. What I really want is a six string but I got the 12 string years and years ago when I was in high school and I can look at it and remember trying to learn "over the hills and far away" on it. I can't bring myself to part with it even though I don't really have any use for a 12 string. I can't justify buying a regular 6 string acoustic either though because I already have nearly 10 guitars laying around.
I have a 50w plexi clone that I bought years ago for cheap because it's a no-name brand ("Smittytone" apparently) and I open it up to get a look at the guts before I sell it, and find out the whole thing is PTP.
For the price I paid, I'm having a hard time convincing myself I would like the money from selling the amp more than the amp itself right now. I'm converting my valve junior to an 18w marshall clone though so hopefully that will sound good enough that I won't mind selling the big boy.
I really have a lot more gear than I need right now - in an ideal world I could have just one or two electrics, one amp, and a 6 and 12 string acoustic. But, because I'm always like "no no I need single pickup kramer for crazy floyd rose dive bombing" I can never really bear to part with anything. Such is life.
