Who knows anything about 12AU7's?

I want to upgrade my Vox Lil' Night Train a bit from the standard issue Chinese valves they use, but the 12AU7 is a valve that doesn't get much of a mention around here.

I'll end up buying from Watford Valves and appear to have a choice of 9 to pick from - Some 12AU7's - where would my money be well spent. I'm looking for value for money rather than necessarily cheap.

Just for note, I've got some decent quality 12AX7's to pick from on the input side, so don't really need to think about those.

Re: Who knows anything about 12AU7's?

I'd suggest replacing the 12AU7 for a 12BH7A; it's a larger tube (about the size of an EL84) with the same pinout and similar performance characteristics. It will last longer and MAY give you a little more power.

I've got some 60's RCA 12au7's I'm selling, if you're interested.

I'd be interested except I doubt it would possible to guarantee getting them sent to the UK before my better half travels back here to Riyadh next Wednesday.

Re: Who knows anything about 12AU7's?

I persoally went with the ECC82/5814A/PHILIPS
I do not go for the "cork sniffer" valves though.

"In audio circuits the valves have a very clear bass response, which is both tight and musical. The sound is well balanced and good even detail across the audio spectrum, with a clear and smooth treble response. The sound quality is not equaled by any modern day valve."

Then choose your 12ax7

Re: Who knows anything about 12AU7's?

Well I've ordered a few things to try out; 2 12AU7's (Phillips & Radio Technique), a 12BH7a (GE), and a couple of 12AX7's (Groove Tubes). Let's see how those go.
