who knows preamp tubes?

B4 you tell me to post this over in amp central let me remind you I'm referring to a tube-powered pedal.

The Maxon ROD881 comes with a 12ay7. I'm looking for something to darken the pedal down a bit. I'm finding I have to roll off the highs quite a bit. I love the responsiveness and punch but I was wondering what tube might give me a bit more warmth and body without sacrificing that great attack and clarity.

That's a low gain preamp tube. I would see if you could find out what brand it was first, then ask one of the tube resellers if they have anything with rolled off highs compared to it. All the tube brands sound a little different.

It is difficult to give you a recommendation without having a starting point.

the 12AU7 has about 20% less gain than the AY, you might try one of those,
