Who likes Pink Floyd?

I just finished watching the Pink Floyd "Live at Pompeii" DVD and just had to ask, "Who here digs Pink Floyd?"

I still remember being shown "Wish You Were Here" when I was a freshman in college (yeah, I realize it was a bit late in my life) and thinking, "Why haven't I been listening to Pink Floyd before this?!?"

Anyone else just totally dig Pink Floyd? I can't get enough of Gilmour and the craziness that is Floyd!!! Keep in mind I'm mostly a metal guy, but Floyd just strikes a chord with me! :bigthumb:

P.S. - Maybe this should go in the "Off Topic" area!

Wow, nobody likes Floyd? Now I'm hurt. :crying:

I realize this should be in the Sound Room section, but I'm still surprised.

Re: Who likes Pink Floyd?

I like Pink Floyd. Quite a bit.

Nice! Anyone else find the entrance of the first harmonized solo in "Dogs" (Animals) to be one of the most crazy musical orgasms of all time? Like it's building up to this one point and there's a slight pause followed by... wow what a killer climax! Love the acoustic strumming intro to that tune too!

So many more examples of cool "magical moments" in their music! :smokin:

Listening to harder music kind of blands your taste to better music and you expect heavier instruments etc. After listening to Classical music for 2 weeks though I soon got to appreciate true music again

Animals is one of my favorite Floyd albums, period. Probably in my top 20 albums of all time. When I was like 12 or 13, and started listening to "real" music, I went through my dad's records for cool stuff (Zeppelin, Floyd, Doors, etc...), and he had Atom Heart Mother, Animals, and Meddle.

Gilmore is a great Guitar player. He and Roger Waters did some great stuff together. I don't think the stuff after Waters was as good, but it is still pretty great stuff. I like the Wall I think the best!

Re: Who likes Pink Floyd?

I seriously hope that you're not implying Classical is somehow less than rock or metal.
No, quite the opposite. It's just completley different. Classical is actually more elaborate and more rewarding to listen to if you understand.

I'm more of a rock fan though

It's the sudden switch of different music that I'm reffering to. I can see how you interpreted that. Classical/Rock is awesome, I wish people would do more of it.

You beat off to Pink Floyd?!

Nah it's ok I know what you mean by musical orgasms.

Totally... Symphonic music rocks! :headbang:

There ya go, a "meeting of the minds" so to speak.

I played viola in many orchestras & a few quartets until after my freshman year of college -- decided to cut my losses and concentrate on training my voice in school & continue playing/learning guitar on my own. I still love listening to strings and such though! Composing in that format can be very rewarding as well!

My ultimate vision of music would be a nice mixture of symphonic sounds with rock/metal, but done different than it has been before--where the orchestral parts aren't just there to pad the sound, ya know? It'd sorta be like a heavy metal band gets integrated into the symphony. . .

KISS and Metallica are a couple of examples. KISS did it with our very own Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Hey lets get together, hire an orchestra and make some Orchestral Metal. I can imagine how it would sound in my head right now

Re: Who likes Pink Floyd?

Have you heard Apacolyptica? They're a four piece cello group, and they cover Metallica, Sepultura, Pantera, Tool, etc... and do some incredible originals. I actually prefer their stuff to the "metal band with an orchestra" thing.

Anyway, back on topic, yeah, Floyd's obviously incredible. If you haven't listened to the Syd Barrett stuff, make sure to do so. It's nothing like the more well known music, but incredible nonetheless.

Yeah me too. Do you mean a band with dedicated metal and symphonic instruments as opposed to a metal band playing with an orchestra?

Yes I have heard of them. There is a local band here called Mandala Project that are quite similar. Brass wind instruments and even overdriven Double basses and Cellos. I saw the guitarist use a violin bow on his guitar in one song before he switched to a violin for the next.

One instrument I truly believe has been killed by the computer generated music age, is wind instruments

Re: Who likes Pink Floyd?

I absolutly LOVE PINK FLOYD! Roger waters is an amazing writer, and David Gilmour is the only player I've ever heard be able ot make a guitar "cry". He sets modds with his solos. My favorite albums are defiantly Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. I even get mad at people who wear pink floyd shirts with the dark side of the moon logo on them because its "the cool thing"(just like zep and rolling stones shirts) and they cant even name a song off of it:smack:

Re: Who likes Pink Floyd?

Nothing like a little mescaline and the sounds of Pink Floyd perpetually swirling around you. :13:
