Who likes the RAT?

Re: Who likes the RAT?

I love MY RAT !!!

Saying that, i have a custom RAT, made by a Dutch Boutique co. called Technophobia.

It is a four in one RAT.

1) Rat II
2) Turbo Rat
3) Custom Tube Rat (tubescreamer morphed with the Vintage Rat)
4) Clean Booster

It also have a blend knob, for mixing the wet & dry (unaffected) signal.
Never will i need a nother Dist. pedal.
With this one i get from no dist. to fully blown fuzzy goodness !!!
Oh, and a clean boost ala MXR's Micro Amp !

THE BEST RAT IN THE WORLD . . . is mine:smokin:

Re: Who likes the RAT?

I've never had the pleasure of playing a RAT with the old chip, but I like my recent RAT 2 just fine. I gave my little brother my DS-1 after I got it because I never used it again.

Re: Who likes the RAT?

As far as the "standard" model RAT is concerned, what are the sonic differences between the new and old chip? And, when buying one used can you tell which version (chip) you are getting without opening the pedal?

After hearing the clips on the ProCo site I'm really gassing for one, so I want to be as informed as possible so I get the "right" one.

Cheers,

CJ

You can't just look at the pedal and tell the difference but on the lat(er) model RATs (the ones made in the past 8-12 years if you take the battery door off you can see the PCB and on the PCB will be an 8 pin chip...I forget what the number on the new(er) ones are but the older (and better IMO) say LM 308

The LM 308 Rats are the ones to get IMO...Pro Co says there is no difference but I have gone head to head and I feel that the LM 308 versions are a bit smoother and less harsh in the treble.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the band Ratt???? I was wondering why Christian responded to this thread???? LOL!!!!

Re: Who likes the RAT?

I have used my friend's oooooold RAT people thru his 81 Marshall 2203 with 6550's and all I can say is wow - grit, attitude, and feel. Very expressive.

Then again that amp sounds pretty nice with a $30 DS1 in front.

Re: Who likes the RAT?

I think it's a really versatile pedal. Definitely got a color all its own. Crank it and it rocks, or what I like to do is keep the gain relatively low and roll back the volume on my guitar...great for chord work and slick jazzy leads/fills. Put a boost in front of it for more sustain when needed.

Yeah, I like the RAT.

Re: Who likes the RAT?

I absolitely love the borrowd one I have... Perhaps my appplication i a little different, I kick it in for sustain for solo-ing and I can hold a note and let it feedback... That exact same note. Very cool. Like a fernandes sustainer. and tone to boot!

Re: Who likes the RAT?

I conned a buddy of mine to leave his at my place for a few weeks; it made our crappy little practice amps sound awesome. That was in 1989 or thereabouts, though...haven't played through one since.

My Guitarport has a Rat model. I prefer the Tube Screamer model...but since neither are the real deal, it's a moot point.

Re: Who likes the RAT?

The Rats were made in Kalamazoo MI and I bought one when they were first released from Arnoldt Williams Music in the early 80s. It's beat to heck and its had the battery connector replaced twice and the stomp switch replaced once but it refuses to die.

Run into my 1984 Marshall 2203 it is a killer sounding pedal.

Find an original 80s big box if you can. You get a big "clunk" when you hit the switch but the tone is worth the noise.
