Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

Title pretty much says it all. I'm looking at possibly getting a new strat but I need to know what companies make good ones, like G&L and Hamer (though Hamer doesn't make strats anymore, I know the ones they did make were amazing).

Just curious, why don't you want a Fender? That's the origin of the Strat. For the money, the MIM Strats are the best buys on the market right now. But, G&L does make a great one. Tom Anderson makes a great one, too.

I was wondering the same thing. Theres really no better value than a MIM strat with upgraded electronics.

I don't want a Fender because I owned one of the newer American Deluxe strats and it was a peice of ****. The tone on it sucked, and it always went out of tune. Hardly worth the 1100 dollars I payed for it. I could get a Mexican Fender strat and get the exact same quality and pride as the American strats.

My old guitar teacher used to be hardcore Fender. He had like a 69 strat that he absolutely LOVED. One day he stumbled upon a Hamer Daytona. He started playing that exclusively. Later, his shop carried nothing but Hamers. All I gotta say. :)

The problem is not getting a fender strat but getting the fender strat. ;) There are really good ones, you gotta digest its tone before going ahead and buying it.

Blade Levinson does some very nice stratty guitars.

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

Sadowsky, Grosh, Anderson, Suhr to name a few who all make variations on a theme.

Why not ask one of our fine builders on the board to make you one - Blueline, JohnJohn etc - some of their work is astonishing and every bit as good as anything the others put out and although personally I don't know the prices probably a lot cheaper. If you are going to pay Custom Shop prices for a guitar from Fender the probability is that its going to be a keeper. The guys I have mentioned on this board will go over and above what anyone else does and to my mind that is going to be worth far more.

Perhaps some of the other guys who have had guitars made for them would like to post their guitars for you to look at and admire.

I understand about the American Deluxe. It's appalling to me that a company would charge what they do for a product but not really care about how they're made. But I believe that what MikeS and myself are saying is that the Mexican Strats seem to be made quite well (mine plays very nicely, sounds like a Strat and doesn't go out of tune), and you can pick them up for about a 1/3 of what you paid for the American Deluxe. Good luck with your search.

ESPs. I can't rememeber what they called them but they were outstanding! My biggest gear regret was returning a great one back to the store after my wife went through the roof when she saw it.....

That thing was beautiful transparent red and played absolutely perfectly! BUT, it wasn't worth a divorce.

That's my point :-). If I wanted a Fender I'd just get a Mexican strat (the quality in woods is all the same, construction is the same), and the workers at the mexican factories really do put pride in their work, and the factory is really nice. However, I really like to buy American, and I want a strat that's going to last me the rest of my life (hopefully).

I can't agree more with a Mexican strat. Mine is better than most American models I've picked up. Trick is like others have said is finding the Ultimate one. Just go up into a big guitar shop and try out 5-15 Mims then pick out the best one. This neck I have on my MIM is so much nicer to me than the American ones. plus you will save some money and be able to throw some good pickups in there. I have Blue and Gold lace sensors in mine. If you go to the Soundclips thread you can hear a tune I recorded on the Mim on the clean channel. Peace

yeah i almost bought an ESP custom shop Vintage plus before i bought my moore...it was a close decision...which basically came down to my liking one store over another...

that was one of, if not the feeling sounding strats i ever played...!!!

For a vintage vibe, Lentz, Suhr, and DeTemple are considered the best of the best. For a more modern version, Anderson and the Suhr limited edition guitars would be a great option. The only drawback is they're all pricey but if you want the best and you're gonna keep it for life, these would be my picks.
