Who makes you want to get a Strat?

This thread is for the hardcore NON-Strat players. For example, I'm a Tele guy. I own three different Teles, and that's it. I don't claim to have a well-rounded collection, I simply play Teles and I'm happy with that.

You might be a Les Paul guy, or into shred sticks, or pointies, or jazz boxes, or whatever...

But every once in a while, you hear something that makes you say, "That's brilliant. I want to get a regular old S/S/S Strat, so I can sound like that." Who is it that does that to you?

John Mayer.

Sounds like a cop-out response from me, but it's the damn truth. Every time I hear his "Where The Light Is" DVD, I feel the need to play a Strat.

I have had one for 15 years and I have still never figured out how to sound good with it.

I am a Strat guy, but I have Teles & Gibsons too. I think its a matter of picking the right axe for the right tune. I usually gig with something with Humbuckers & something with singles. I prefer Strats over Teles. Nothing wrong with a Tele at all.... in fact there are certain songs that absolutely require a Tele. Strats just feel more natural in my hand. What made me initially gravitate to a Strat in the first place was Hendrix & Clapton. More Jimi, then Eric and then Gilmore. I think David Gilmore's tone is the epitome of a Strat sound.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Jimi Hendrix...a couple of months ago I made the comment that "I'm just not a Strat Guy"...well...now I'm eating those words and having the below STRATOCASTER assembled! :)

SRV, Gilmour and Malmsteen are the three reasons I got a strat.

Pretty much my favorite sounds on a strat.

Larry Lalonde, before Primus.

And not just any Strat...

Read the headstock closely. :D

I didn't doctor that picture in any way, that's directly from "The Encyclopedia Of Heavy Metal."

While it's ok to want what your hero played, even if it's a Squier Strat, that doesn't mean the guitar is not a turd that said hero didn't have to fight with everytime he picked it up. It's usually a case of the hero not having enough money to buy a better one.
Then there are those who put a different logo on their guitar so the fanboys don't flush out the used market (alal Jake Lee's white Charvel - it was a 3-bolt Fender which he had relogoed for that very reason).

A couple of months ago I saw this older blues guitarist at one of the area tribal casinos one night playing a Strat and bought one that week. You just can't get that tone out of anything else.

1st - I wasn't being serious.

2nd - You should be posting this for everyone here, not just me.

3rd - There are plenty of pics and videos online of him playing Jackson guitars. I'm guessing he really did like this Squier, as it was on their last tour that he was playing it. Looking at the bridge, that's one of the cheaper ones. I suppose it's entirely possible that he got an original 21 fret CBS Headstock USA neck and mated it to a Squier body and put a Squier logo on it.. or that's pretty much a stock guitar. He played Strats for the first few years he was with Primus too.

Carl Verheyen

Jeff Healey. Just saw Roadhouse again (but made fun of by Rifftrax).

Knopfler for DAMM sure! Man, Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing?
