Re: WHO REMEMBERS THEIR FIRST GUITAR????
I still have it. It started life as a vintage white 1985 Fender Japanese '50's Stratocaster. When I got it in the early '90's, it had been modded. The original guard, pickups, electronics, and tuners were all gone, and the neck had been stripped and oiled. The bridge was blocked down with screws through the top of the guitar. It had EMGs and a black guard, with V/T controls...and Schaller tuners. I quickly blocked the vibrato properly (with a block of wood) and removed the screws that held down the vibrato from the top. I put 15–58 strings on it. I played it like this for a long time. I eventually changed it to a more proper '50's look, first with a white guard, then with a gold guard. It got water damaged at one point, so I put it aside for several years.
A few months ago, I decided to spruce it up. As part of that, I also got the itch to mod it as well. I put the EMGs back in, wired V/T/T/T with stack knobs (so I could use the "original" two-hole black guard). I made it 18V, and turned the vibrato cavity into a battery box. I also installed a period-correct mid-'80's Kahler pulled from a Jackson. I got all black hardware and a black nut. I decided to strip the neck of its grungy, water-damaged oil and refinish it. When I was messing with the neck, I didn't realize that the water damage had welded the truss adjustment nut to the rod. So I busted the truss rod (a first for me). Actually, nothing metal broke. I just busted the weird MIJ knurled anchor out of its pocket; if it had been a standard MIA-type truss anchor, it probably would not have happened. So now the neck has been gutted, and I need to put a new rod in and recap it before finishing it.
Here is a picture of the body as it now stands, waiting for its neck to be fixed:
