Who says a Jag...

can't be metal? OK, at least kind of metal. Distorted that is :laugh2:

Thread in elsewhere prompted me to pull out my LP again. (It's presently being kept in its case as a semi investment cause it's good enough... for an LP... I don't really wanna sell it... but PM me if you really want it ;) Plus I need it for when I have to sound like everyone else).

Played it for a while, started thinking about how sweet it sounded... Then I pulled out the Fender and remembered why I love Jags so much :laugh2:

I wrote a few metal riffs I was going to record the comparo with, but in the end decided I might as well treat ya'll to part of a song, even though it isn't mine :smack: VERY Abridged Good Time Boys by RHCP.

same settings on amp (both bridge pickups, Vox AD30VT gain at 3 o clock, treble at 2 o clock, bass at noon, no effects). In reality I'd dial more treble into the LP and more Bass (and gain) in the Jag, but I wanted everything equal. Both guitars are bone stock, Gibson has 498T pickup, Fender has stock SC.

LP following:

I rushed both of these because my hands hurt (trying to get a Triumph TR7 running all day), couldn't find my metronome etc... Plus I'm not trying to brag about my superior playing, I'll leave that for another thread :smokin: Just trying to highlight the tone :laugh2: Still, if there's enough interest I'll play some stuff when I'm more articulate. (or some clean clips or something)

I do think the Jag sounds better :smokin: Not that the LP sounds bad. But here's a finger for everyone who says you CAN'T use a stock Jag for any sort of distortion :D I prefer the clarity and "grind" of the Jag any day over the smoothness of the Paul.

Re: Who says a Jag...

I vote for the jaguar. I just LOVE the great cut, grit and liveliness you get from a good single ;)

Re: Who says a Jag...

Since I was assuming I would get lambasted for my awful playing and I didn't, here's a bonus clip :D Clean now. Made up this little surfy rhythm thingy to show comparison.

Fender tweed model, both pickups selected, treble/mids/bass at 2:00 across the board, gain at 1:00 on Jag, 9:00 on LP cause there was too much breaking up. Resisted the urge of adding reverb and chorus :D

In retrospect this sounds like "Ventura Highway" a bit, hmm...

as a matter of fact I'm gonna make a song now :D Maybe I'll post it later :laugh2:

But for now here

EDIT: OK, as a bonus, I have to inclued this, my favorite, the jag neck alone :D

Re: Who says a Jag...

jag sounds great, but the lp sounds super awesome and is a bit more versatile for many types of metal/hard rock

Re: Who says a Jag...

I figure if I'm ever actually recording in the studio or in a real band or something most people would rather I had a LP with me. That's why I'm keeping it.

But something about that twang... that's me. I think the Jag's sound can add to any kind of music. It's a bit of a wakeup call, and I don't think it sounds completely out of place in metal :D

I'm right there with ya, Slade. It sounds different, in a good way. Aside from all of that, if it sounds good to you, I say go with it. Why be like eight bazillion other guys who have to do it one particular way?

Re: Who says a Jag...

I think you may have skewed the results a bit by playing a RHCP tune. Still, it's an awesome sounding guitar. I prefer Jazzmasters, but they're both great. They do really well with that type of grinding gain.

Re: Who says a Jag...

As an RHCP fanatic, I actually know that song was originally played using a black les paul, like mine (except a real les paul :laugh2:) And I think the paul actually manages to get closer to the recording sound. During that period john used the paul and a bowling ball Ibanez RG, he hadn't yet been open to the glory of the Jag :D

Thanks for the support Rob :)

Re: Who says a Jag...

Oh, ok ... sorry for the faulty assumption. I liked the tone of both, but the Jag had some snappy harmonic overtones that were very unique. The Les Paul sounded cool, but it's not as distinctive or interesting a tone.

Re: Who says a Jag...

maybe a tidge harsh on the jag, both sound great, i have to say i like the jag more, it's got a good punch. IMO you have the right to brag, you're a great player. this makes me kind of embarassed about my playing :smack:

what models were each of the guitars? i love the sound of that jaguar and that les paul! but mostly the jag!

Re: Who says a Jag...

The Jag is a stock MIJ 96 40th anniversary Jag, one of the first they made in alder.

The Paul is a '98 The Paul II which means it's got a 3/4 width mahogany body, carved top but no maple cap, no frills etc. Cheapo axe from gibson. Stock also with 498/490s.

Thanks by the way :D My self esteem needs a boost lately, I'm simply not arrogant enough :D

If it makes you feel better you're a better player than I was at 14 (when I learned my first open chords), and you'll probably progress more than I have in that amount of time :laugh2:

actually, to be quite honest: that does make me feel better. normally i'm quite low on self esteem and i just don't think i'm very good. i've got two parties a.k.a. guitarbique that i'm gonna play at so i'm gonna need some new songs!

PM me with some good suggestions of songs most people would know. NO EMO! :laugh2: . preferably hard rock but not too hard to play. i have like 2 or 3 weeks to learn. i'm thinking ten years gone may be a good candidate. some tenacious d stuff would be cool cause it's funny stuff and people WILL laugh! and who could forget some easier chili peppers stuff! :)

Re: Who says a Jag...

californication is a nice easy peppers song. little riff, a few chords, easy solo. Or Can't Stop.

STP's Plush- simple but always sounds cool. Interstate Love song might work.

Old School Green Day? Dookie? Crowd pleasers, and hard to **** up :laugh2: Even if it's not your kind of music. The object is never to show off, just do what you do best.

Re: Who says a Jag...

i might be able to see if i can fit my band in (originally just gonna be me) but it might too close of quarters (i hate noise ordinances!) :)

those sound like great reccomendations. and to be quite honest, i like "when i come around." by green day :)

i also just thought of (really popular songs, but o well) under the bridge and otherside by rhcp!

Re: Who says a Jag...

I think the Jag sounds waay better than the LP. But I'm not really a fan of LPs... so that may be why :p

Not to say the Jag doesn't sound great. I would have owned one long ago, but I can't get used to the short scale

Re: Who says a Jag...

From a strat pilot that's acceptable ;)

But from a Paul player saying the same thing, I find that 24" and 24.75" are basically the same in practice. No complaints ought to come from them then :laugh2:
