Who Says You Can't do that with a Strat...

Re: Who Says You Can't do that with a Strat...

Old strat player here...I have one stock(almost stock strat) and two superstrats, one is my Kramer, it is a ssh setup, no split or anything just a 5way switch, my other is a Tokai from 84 that is setup like a Jazzbass really, just without the toneknob, it is setup with a humbucker bridge and neck single.
The "stock" one is my HW-1 strat, it has two APS-1's and a APS-2 with a steelbar underneath the magnets, the tones are wired for the neck and bridge only, I have tried with a few different humbuckers, but nothing really beats the singles, I'll get a Twangerbanger someday soon...hehe I heard tha Lew has one or two of them;)
I'm looking for one more standart strat, this one needs to have a rosewood board, then I will have equal numbers of each necktype:D
I like strats best, never bonded with standart LP's, only likes Jr's, maybe it is because of the plank like way it is made?
Never tried a PRS or PRS style guitar I liked, I guess that I am not into furniture guitars much eh??
hehe
I like my Wolfgang though, but the scalelenght and feel is more like a tele/strat to me, so I feel at home.
I have had everything from EMG's to other curious pickups on my strats, I still like APS-1s and SSL-1's the best, the Ants are very nice too, but Ilike the rawness of the APS's and SSL's the best.
The EMG's lasted two gigs back then and then I traded them for a set of APS-1's and a JB humbucker:D
I love strats....both sss and ssh, plus hh and sh style;)
One h as well of course:D

I got my strat because I wanted to buy new. Now, I wouldn't. I know I could have saved some cash by going with used. But, for the money and buying new the JV strat was getting rave reviews and I viewed the purchase as possibly the best bang for my buck. I almost bought a HH tele. First, I ordered a Fat Strat from MF. But it was on back order for more than a month. it was the pewter body with the black pickguard. It look really good. But, I was getting impatient and they had the oly white JV in stock so I called and changed the order and tool delivery on the JV.

Since it came out of the box it felt very comfortable to play and sounds great. I wanted a versatile guitar and it turns out it is more versatile than I had imagined.

That's funny about the Fat Strat. My first Strat was gonna be that same model guitar in black, and after being on back order for months I called to see what was going on. They said they were out of black and that all they had was pewter, so i had 'em send my money back. Guess they ran out of pewter too? haha

It's all personal, but I like strats because of the feel, the bite and the versatility. With effects or different amps you can get just about any sound you want. But everyone has their own, and that's what makes electric guitar so fascinating.

BTW, I'm listening to Rory Gallagher right now; the live disc from the BBC Sessions. His plays a really hot sounding strat? Is he a dry signal player? Plug his strat into the Marshall and crank it up and he is ready to roll?

Nice avatar. :fing2:

Rory went through various amps over the years. His Strat always had regular Strat pickups, but he used a Rangemaster treble booster to push the input of the amp. (I believe Brian May used one of those too). Rory also had his Strat wired with a master tone control so he could roll back the tone on the bridge pickup (as you can on your JV Strat).

I recently got the Rockpalast live DVD of Rory and his bridge pickup tone is exactly that "You can't do that with a Strat" kind of tone. Great to see how he works the knobs too!

Just to play the devil's advocate;

I still strongly believe that you cannot play black/deathmetal with a normal strat and ds-1. :p

Re: Who Says You Can't do that with a Strat...

Been listening to my old early-mid 80's Gary Moore cd's over the last little while.... man that guy can play and belt out a tune at the same time.... wish i could of fronted a band like he does.... But he is playing metal with strats and Marshalls plus the DS1... No it ain't Death Metal but it is metal like or at least really heavy rock.... Victims Of The Future and Death In The Sky are 80's metal type tunes... Makes me want to grab my stock strat and crank my JCM 800... but it's 2 am......

Your right, that would probably require 2 DS-1's. :D
But, if you heard what i was hearing, you'd realize that the strat plus DS-1 was getting really close. Maybe substituting the Metal Zone for the DS-1 would get the the rest of the way to a heavier tone with strat.

FWIW, BTW I'm more into music for the living...:p

I love this JV strat, but I still would love to have Fat Strat. One day maybe.

Can I tell you the why I own a strat. The single biggest reason that I even looked at strats and considered owning them is this forum and Lewguitar. You guys opened my eyes to the wonders of strat's. When I started looking, I was thinking HH and ended up with SSS. I'm glad I did it.

But, it doesn't help that all my guitar icons from youth are non-strat players Tom Scholz, Ted Nugent, Phil Collen, Rick Neilson, Uli Roth, EVH, KK Downing, to name a few.

Rangemaster?

Indeed. It adds a certain liquidity to the upper registers. You can hear it on Black Sabbath's self-titled album as well.

Ahh yes, the famed Dallas Rangemaster. Excellent circuit. The fun part is finding the stinkin' germanium transistor that actually has the right hfe and doesn't leak.

The Brian May treble booster is a bit different than the Rangemaster. Same basic idea though.

Re: Who Says You Can't do that with a Strat...

I saw some old footage of Motorhead playing live back around the Ace Of Spades era.... The guitarist was using a stock looking 3 single coil strat...... sounded pretty heavy already!

You can pull Uli off that list...all strats..all the time...til he started up with those Sky Guitars...which is a 7 string 40 fret strat :)

Gary's tone was heavy...no not that death metal stuff..then again..there's so much gain in death/nu/black whatever metal.. you could roll of the bridge tone control to 4 or 5..bring some highs back with the amp, and you prolly could never tell it was a single coil strat...Did that with my Malmsteen and had no issue copping chunky MOP-era Metallica tones....music any heavier than that makes me wanna dial in a light FM station for some Tony Orlando and Dawn...

tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak treee.........

Why did I say Uli when I meant Matthias Jabs :smack: ( says to self "Dummy" :smash: )

So, Rory's tribute guitar says it has Fender 60's pickups in it. Does that mean that they are likely all 3 wound to ~6k?

MotorHead Ace of Spades? That wasn't Fastway Eddie was it, no FE has left MotorHead by the ACe of Spades and was playing with Fastway right?

Is the SD SFX-01 a rangemaster clone?

Trilogy...nice sig. thanks.

Re: Who Says You Can't do that with a Strat...

This may not mean squat now but KK played Strats in Priest's early days. I had a couple posters of him and Glenn with KK holding a Strat and Glenn playing his black SG. In fact, KK is playing a red w/ white pickguard Strat in the "Breakin' the Law" video. :D

The SFX-01 isn't really a treble booster. More of full range boost. I have the schematic for the Rangemaster at home if you want it since you've shown an interest in DIY.

I had a CV7003 germanium transistor in a rangemaster kit I bought. Apparently it's a military spec transistor, made for the military as a replacement for the OC44. you probably already know this, but they're more durable and reliable, and although I've never had an OC44, I've been told they sound as good.

Right now I'm trying to sell a tribooster pedal I built as a kit. Has a rangemaster boost, mosfet based clean boost, and silicon based linear power boost all in one. I dont get the chance to play loud enough to use boosts all that often, and right now a microvibe is calling me. The good thing is that the tribooster is negative grounded, unlike the rangemasters that were positive grounded... this is a problem when hooking up a boss daisy chain to power them, since most other pedals are negative grounded, so the daisy chain wont work.

If I ever build another rangemaster, it'll be the rangemaistro, which IIRC, is a negatively grounded so it can be powered by a daisy chain. FYI: I f'in hate batteries..

That's why a strat has always been my favorite all around electric guitar....I can play just about any style of music with it and it's very versatile tonewise.

You can't do Sultans Of Swing on a Les paul and get that in between twang, but Clapton showed us that you can pull off Cream stuff with a strat or close enough...I like having both Fender and Gibson humbucking type instruments to cover my tastes, but the strat is still King!

Yup... If I had to pick just one it would be a Strat. FORTUNATELY I don't. I have lots of others to choose from:)
