Who should I ask to mod JCM800 2204?

I know several names including our very own Jeff Seal at Speaker Surgeon. But I'd like to ask your input based on your exprience.

What I want is simple ... rich and complex texture overdrive sound even at a lower volume ... sorta between ACDC and Van Halen. My '84 2204 with EL34 actually delivers pleasing tone but but I'd take extra steps if I can get better sound.

Any comments?

I'm more familiar with the single channel, hi/low input amps, and, IMO, the early 80's vertical input version of the JCM-800 can be improved a bit - especially if they don't have EL-34 tubes. Modding the amp to use EL-34 tubes would make a big improvement.

And no mods I've found will really bring a '86 or later JCM-800 with the side by side inputs to life...there's something up with transformers or the circuit board layout or something in those amps. They just sound dry to me.

My brother Bruce Collins would be the man I'd recommend: http://www.missionamps.com. I'm picky as all get out and, IMO, Bruce is one of the best in the world.

why not just get a 5150?
Because that amp sucks.

I had a power supply mod done on my 800, and kept the rest stock. It improved the dynamics a lot, and also dropped the background noise considerably!!

has anybody got a circuit board schem for the preamp section of the JCM800? the power amp schem wouldnt hurt also. the actual blueprint, with the needed values of resistors/capacitors and other stuff that needs to be in there. would be greatly apretiated

I have it at home in my History of Marshall book.
You want I should scan and post it?

I would like it, but the question isn't directed at me :13:

Re: Who should I ask to mod JCM800 2204?

Hey I could go for that scan too :laugh2:

If you're looking to get an amp modded, Jeff Seal is the man. This guy was really helpful with me searching for a new amp, and I'll be sending him an 800 as soon as I can. Jeff is great guy... send it to him.

I'm extremely pleased with the work Trace and Anthony from Voodoo Amps did to my Soldano Hot Rod.

I am thinking about possibly checking out voodooamps.com They mod amps. They are located in upstate new york. They will mod it for you while you wait and you can also play your amp afterwards and let them know what other minor tweaks you want until you get the sound you want. Since you live in good old VA also, that wouldnt be a bad weekend trip. I live in NOVA and it is probally something like 4.5 hours away. Let me know if you decide to go this route. I would love to tag along and get mine done also.

Brisk - I can't rave enough about the job that Jeff Seal did on my JCM800. I have the 2205 circuit. Be aware though, that what Jeff does is really a rebuild, as opposed to a simple mod. He will completely remove the stock PC board and sent it back to you with your new amp. The amp gets converted to a PTP scheme that is outstanding. One advantage to this is that Jeff can voice the gain in many different directions....Plexi, Silver Jubilee, 2204, or he can get even more creative and voice it like Soldano, Bogner, ect. Oddly enough when he converted my 2205 we decided on a Plexi/2204 tone stack.

Others I would recommend would be Trace @ Voodoo and Scott Splawn. Both Trace and Scott are in this part of the country, although shipping is not that bad. Scott's mods are more along the lines of Jeff Seal, where as Trace will work mod the current PC board. Which is better???.....who's prettier, Monica Belucci or Kate Beckensale?? It's all in the eye of the beholder. I wanted Fender cleans and clean, smooth, cruncy distortion in one package...that required a re-build. YMMV.

Jeff, I didn't know you have a 2205 (same as me) ... I always thought you had the 100 watter!
How much butt does that amp kick?!!! :D

Re: Who should I ask to mod JCM800 2204?

just looked at the schems.. there's really not a lot in this amp... i had school projects that had more components (none of them worked properly, but thats a side note ROFL)

ok.. now does anyone have a picture/blueprint of the actual board? i'd hate to do this all point to point cos that'd be wire salad LOL, and where could i get the transformers? i got half of the components at home already.. all i'd need would be the tubes, sockets and transformers

Re: Who should I ask to mod JCM800 2204?

coolness. i can get tubes here, but i'd like to get proper transformers cos thats pretty much the main part of any amp

thx man

sorry i hijacked the thread
