Just for a bit of fun . . . no need to start an argument.

Which of the two amps do you feel, sounds more like the all-mighty Soldano SLO ?

The Soldano-inspired Jet City 100W, or the original 5150 ?

The Jet City is an obvious candidate.
Mr Soldano himself helped with the design of this amp.
' With two channels of Soldano tone and 100 watts of pure tube power, this amp was made for the big stage.
The Normal channel has plenty of headroom to deliver clear, bright clean tones and can be driven hard enough to get downright raunchy.
The Overdrive channel is the circuit that made Soldano famous. It’s been modeled and imitated, but this is the real-effing-high-gain-deal. ' - from the Jet City site.

The old block letter Peavey 5150 - well, i read many times, in various forums that when Peavey made an amp for Mr. Van Halen, they copied his beloved SLO.
They just revoiced it ever so slightly (and probably added a wee bit more gain), and used cheaper components, to what was used in the SLOs.

So, which one do you feel is more SLO-like in tone and feel/character ?

I dunno if this is even worth asking.

The Jet City is actually a lower budget version of the Hot Rod 100+, not the SLO.
And the 5150 is a great american amp, but doesn't hold a candle to the SLO.

They're both pretty similar, but the Jet City is a bit rounder, warmer and has a voicing that puts emphasis on the upper spectrum of the low mids. Meanwhile the 5150 is fizzier, tighter, has more gain and is more focused in the lower low mids.

The Jet City tends to sing more and is better at lower and medium gain tones, whereas the 5150 cuts better and has better high gain tones.

IMO neither sounds like a SLO. The Jet City is closer in terms of feel, but the 5150 is closer in terms of character, so........ I dunno.

Re: Who sounds more SLO ? Jet City 100 or Peavey 5150 ?

I've never really heard too many sonic similarities between the 5150 and SLO. I've never played an SLO or a JCA but I've heard plenty of them, and while they arent the same I'd say they're much more similar to each other than the Peavey and Soldano.

Re: Who sounds more SLO ? Jet City 100 or Peavey 5150 ?

My current rig for the band i'm in is a block letter 5150 and to me it doesn't have the same character as a SLO and the gain isn't as clear but it has that aggression and bite to it. A great amp for hard rock and metal but the clean channel just sucks.

If you ever spent some time with a SLO, you know that CTN is on the money.

If you can find a T100 it was also designed by Soldano and shares tonal similarities.

Yamaha T100 vs Soldano

Pretty much on the money IMO. SLO's have a really distinct midrange voice that I haven't heard in any other amp. I don't know if it's from the custom transformers or some other component, but it's there. A Hot Rod Series is quite close tone-wise, but lacking a bit in clarity and cut (though still very good for a high gain amp). 5150s OTOH are tighter, punchier, & fizzier than a Soldano. All three (SLO, Hot Rod, & 5150) have more gain on tap than anyone should ever need.

Yeah , I would say neither one of them are in the ball park. Noticed that I never see anyone mention a Matchless around here, speaking of wonderful pricey amps?

See . . . i actually like the clean channel on my 5150.

Re: Who sounds more SLO ? Jet City 100 or Peavey 5150 ?

the jet city is closer but throw in £4 worth of parts and you can make it even closer.

Re: Who sounds more SLO ? Jet City 100 or Peavey 5150 ?

Not what i was asking about, but i found this on another forum.
They are pretty close to one another.

This as you can see, is the newer Fender-made 5150III, and not the 90's block letter 5150.

Re: Who sounds more SLO ? Jet City 100 or Peavey 5150 ?
