Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

I think I know this guitar(?). Definitely needs ebony, good call.

Agreed. I never understood why the MIJ LPCs would get 4/5ths of the way there and then scrimp on the board. I'd have ended my search for a white LPC ages ago if ebony was more prevalent on the Japan stuff.

Already sitting on the bench... :D

Awesome ... which "24 ¾" scale length is the guitar (always liked that feature of Gibson's and clones ... 3 different lengths over time and location).

Halt! :D I will put in my vote to forget the ebony. Rosewood is fine. Just stain it black. It would be a shame to yank the nicely bound board off of the guitar. The finish is one thing, but pulling apart factory joints just for cosmetic reasons is another.

The fretboard of my Aerodyne Tele is "ebonized" rosewood, and I love it. Looks great! And the perfect time to do it is now, when the frets are out.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

How hard is that to do with big block inlays still in the board?

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

The inlays are plastic, and swapping the board was one of the first things that started me down this road. I figured if I was going thru the trouble of swapping out the board, I might as well do something cool with the finish.

Depending on my schedule this week, I think I may get to the board swap this weekend.

Not cosmetic ... ebony feels and sounds completely different, and the feel is the most important part for me.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

holy ****... this thread made me realize how badly I want a "naked" LPC. The natural wood look with all of the binding in tact is so slick looking.

My pants are shrinking...:11:

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

You sir are my hero... looking forward to seeing how this turns out. You have my attention........

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

This thing looks great already, I'm excited for this one!

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Oh boy, I really do love these things.

Have you thought of spicing it up a bit with a figured veneer over the plain maple top?

No way to do that unless I retop the guitar, and then recarve.

I have a solid color in mind.

Looking forward to how this turns out.

FWIW- alot of the old late 70s/early 80s Burny customs (and I think Grecos too) had an ebony board, but then they switched over to RW in the late 80s. These days it's just Edwards/Navigator & Bacchus AFAIK.

The Orville has a two-part heel? I'm disgusted.
