Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

I just purchased the Whole Lotta Humbucker set for my 2017 PRS Custom 24 SE and was wondering if anyone else has done this with a SE? After narrowing it down to Lollar El Rayo's or the Whole Lotta Humbucker set, I think I made the right choice and saved $100. The stock pickups were lifeless to me in the PRS.

Re: Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

Welcome to the forum!

I have played the WLH set in other PRS guitars, and they were a *huge* improvement over stock pickups. I think you will like them. Come back and let us know how they sound when they are installed (and include a pic!).

Re: Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

So I got the pickups and someone said I need to take the covers of and reposition 2 wires inside or it will sound out of phase on the SE CU24. I was just going to wire it according to the diagram for coil splitting or just copy what already exists. Is there any truth to this matter? Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Re: Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

It will be out of phase if you have green (or white) from one going to ground and black (or red) from the other going to ground. This is often the correct wiring for a PRS. What you should do in this case is flip a magnet in one of the pickups; preferably the one with black or red going to ground, but which pickup does not matter.

Here's how it should be wired, color codes are Duncan. It should not be out of phase if you follow it correctly:

Re: Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

PRS guitars with the old 5 position rotary switch have the magnet of the bridge pickup reversed so it it magnetically out of phase with the neck pickup. The switch puts it in phase.

If your guitar has a 3 position Les Paul style switch you should be able to wire your new pickups up without altering them.

Place the neck and bridge pickups face to face and see if the screw pole pieces attract or repel.

If they repel you should be good to go.

The way I posted above is how the newer SE Custom 24s are wired, so there should be no problem with phase if wired as above.

Almost.

The one magnet is flipped so that the split combination of like coils are hum-cancelling. Flipping a magnet reverses the magnetic polarity through the coils. Reversing the magnetic polarity reverses the flow of current in the coil, and when the two pickups are combined they will be out of phase. Reversing the wind direction of one of the pickups (by swapping the wires of each coil) will put the combination of the pickups back in phase again.

Just a problem with hum in the middle position when the pickups are split which isn't necessary.

Now if pulling the cover off of one of the pickups in order to flip the magnet and swapping red with green and black with white isn't worth the trouble, then so be it.

Re: Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

If you don't mind hum in all three positions when the pot is pulled, then yes.

An alternative would be to wire them up in parallel instead of split, which would have a slightly different tone, but be noiseless in all 6 possible positions. Even if you flip the magnet in one humbucker and reverse the hot and ground wires, the best you are going to get is 4/6 positions being noiseless. But SD pickups aren't all that noisy to begin with. It's your choice.

Re: Whole Lotta Humbuckers Set

To the OP: Just out of curiousity, do your two PRS pickups attract or repel?

If they attract they’re magnetically out of phase.

Just curious.

Because they defy the laws of physics, no doubt.

FWIW, the last PRS-style HH I did that had a three-way and pair of push-pulls to change modes did the following:

Neck in parallel or series
Bridge in parallel or series
Bridge in series and Neck in parallel or series
Bridge in parallel and Neck in series, or...
Bridge and Neck both split to inner slug coils

All combinations hum-cancelling

Neck in parallel with bridge in parallel is generally not a good combination, IMO; so that option was replaced by the inner slug coils.
