Whole lotta humbuckers vs Paf 36ths?

Hi folks,

This is my first post and hope you can help me select some new humbuckers. I have a 1980s Les Paul copy made in Korea by GTX that I have owned since I was 14. I'm now in my 30s and have a pretty good selection of guitars, but want to update this one and replace the hardware, pickups and electronics. Although it's a copy I took it to my guitar tech and he explained that they used a nice piece of mahogany and maple cap, and it has a great 50s style neck with the frets still in great shape. I'm going to get the 50s style wiring kit from mojotone and am looking for a PAFish pickup that can also rock. I play anything from 60s Clapton and Peter Green, to Jimi Page, Slash and early Eddie Van Halen. I also play jazz and blues. My amps are an Avatar 45 watt JTM45 clone and a Mesa Lonestar Classic. I like to get my overdrive from the amp and control things from my volume and tone controls.

I used to have a JB and 59 in the guitar but moved them to a different guitar as the JB was too strong in the bridge and the 59 a bit scooped, though I did like it's clean tones. I have burstbucker 2&3s in a epiphone les paul, and I have dimarzio super distortion and paf36th in a charvel type. I really like the paf 36th in the neck and was considering a paf 36th set for the GTX. Based on the price and good reviews they seem like a good value and quality.

I contacted Seymour Duncan to see what they would recommend and they came up with the whole lotta humbuckers. From the sound clips and reviews these also look great and I love 70s Page and classic rock. However they are quite a bit more expensive that the paf36ths. So my question is does anyone have experience with the WLH's and PAF 36ths and have a strong preference for one over the other? Thanks!

Well I am a long time Duncan user but I had to get Dimarzios for my Music Man (the guitar is not routed to accept the common Duncan mounting tabs) and I have a 36th anniversary neck sitting on my desk waiting for the pots and Transition bridge to come in. I can give you a comparison within the next week or so. FWIW, I play in a classic rock cover band and jam a bunch of different genres of music with my other jam buddies. I haven't tried the WLH but I can at least give you my impressions of the 36th.

Thanks dude, I think you 'll like it. I like the PAF 36th in the neck of my parts caster . Really articulate and great for soloing. That's my dilemma. Go with the PAF 36ths that I have experience with . Or pay a bit more for the WLH's that are getting such good reviews.

Haven't tried the WLH but I do have (split-able) 36th's in my '84 LPC. I play everything from blues to metal with them.
Happiest I have ever been with pups in that guitar, and I've tried 4-5 before these -- they aren't coming out ANY time soon.
