My Warmoth build with a Custom8:

This one's a smokin' hunk of Korina and Flame Maple that I had sitting around for about a decade that tips the scales at just a little under 6 lbs. Pickup is a NOS DiMarzio PAF from 1980 that I had been saving for just the right guitar.

The neck on this one is perfect (for me, anyway). Mucho thanks to Jay at NTL Guitar in Nashville and Stike at ROWYCO Kustoms for knocking this one out of the park!

I also really love Esquires - for some reason, better than Teles. This one's also a featherweight, huge honkin' neck, and sounds incredible. It's a "tribute" to my original '62, and another bit of work from Stike at ROWYCO Kustoms:

This is the real deal, from April, 1962:

I haven't had a single-pickup guitar since I sold my Kramer Focus 1000. There is a certain appeal to the simplicity, in not thinking about when or if you'll switch to another pickup. You just play.

Re: who's rockin' a single pickup guitar? let's see it!

I played one of these for a long time as my EVH guitar. Had a custom shop '78 in it. Great guitar! So undervalued. Looked exactly like this one. Same color and everything although mine had a black Duncan '78.

It's now rocking out on the Pine Ridge Reservation where I hope some budding "Lakota rock star to be" is riffing out on it. Unity of Boulder goes up there every winter with Christmas gifts and warm coats and clothes for the Sioux and last year I sent along my guitar.

I kept the '78 though and installed a 59/Custom hybrid pickup Zhang sent me years ago to try.

I loved it, BTW. Sounded just as good as the '78. Not the same but just as good.

An move across the Pacific meant selling everything here, but the 67 Melody Maker (DMZ Fast Track 2) is the only sale I regret. Ok, maybe the Hiwatt too...

Avril Lavigne Fender Squire signature model Telecaster. SD TB-4 (wired: single/series/parallel), Sperzel locking tuners, D'Addario XL 11's tuned to D standard. I found this one used at a local music store at a good price. Needed a beater to travel with. Ended up paying more for the tuners and pickup than the guitar. Now I use it almost daily. I find it silly that I use it primarily for playing melodic death metal. Take that, Ms. Lavigne, or Kroeger, or whatever....

looks hot with that green pickup. i myself have single pickup guitar envy to the point where i wish i could go back in time, when they were making the guitars that i have, and say "eh dont worry about that second one" that is why i lurk this thread like a fixated co-worker.

here is a kind of arty shot:

and a less arty shot:

its a recording king that i attacked with an angle grinder and put in a gibson 57 with a5 mag. The pickup is reversed as you can see because i wanted the screws to line up with the sweet spot (24th fret harmonic). The chrome was a bit too shiny so i took the sheen off it with some scotch brite. Its a pretty good sounding reso which ive started using at some blues gigs recently. I just plug it thru a fender twin and it gets a pretty fat and pleasing sound.

I have a guitar in the works. An old beat-up Samick guitar that will be getting a Gibson Original Mini-Humbucker.:drive:

Re: who's rockin' a single pickup guitar? let's see it!

Well, I'm just starting this project, but this is the foundation:
$(KGrHqV,!lUFBfluLJF7BQleOiY3,Q~~60_58.JPG

My plan is to take it all down and laminate something on (as the top is all that's ****ed up, sides and back are fine). I'm thinking an Evil Dead II poster, maybe just "the end is nigh" over and over with no spacing in the Omega-Man font with some blood splatter, maybe just some Iron Maiden poster. Maybe I'll bust out the type writer and fill some pages with "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and slap the old "HERE'S JOHNNY!" on it.

It's gonna be a single Painkiller or big ceramic Custom with a single volume, should be pretty abrasive.

That looks like a rewarding project.

Do yourself a favor and find some place that can simply plane sand the front and back off for you. Then you only have to strip the sides.

I don't plan on stripping it entirely, the finish on the back and sides is really decent, the picture actually looks worse than it is. Odd duck it is, it's basswood with a thin birch laminate on the top, no idea why. There's a couple deeper pits where the birch chipped out, I'm just gonna fill them, they're not very deep. If I was going to totally refinish it I would do exactly what you said, take that birch of entirely. I'd probably even slap a maple cap on it. It's always a fallback option.
