who's using a Staple or Phat Staple?

Re: who's using a Staple or Phat Staple?

I had Phat Staples in my Explorer. I have since removed them because I want to send them in to have them converted to gold hardware (I bought them nickel because they were a really good deal used).

Man, they sound awesome. They have a way of being juicy and fat, yet also cutting. It's like everything I love about vintage soap bars and vintage Stat pickups, all in one pickup.

^ Yep, that last sentence really sums up staple pickups. It really is the true offspring of a p90 and strat.

What guitars did you guys put the staple in? I have a dogear semi hollow guitar and would love to try one. I know that the depth of the staples is a possible issue.

Re: who's using a Staple or Phat Staple?

I have one in the neck of an Epi LP. Nice clean and clear tones. They're a tall pickup and won't fit in most solid and semi-hollow pickup slots unless they're pretty deep. Great pickup in the neck, I wouldn't use one in the bridge slot (used a P-90 there).

The problem with that PU is the cost and the height, both driven by having adjustable pole piece bar magnets. I've never adjusted the height on mine, and imagine few people have on theirs. I wish Duncan would come out with a simple non-adjustable lower-height version. It would sell better.

I had James from ReWind do a full custom staple without the magnet lifters. Made it much thinner and easier to rout for - although being a scratch build I could have had any depth and size pickup I liked practically.
Additionally the typical diagonal corner screws in the vintage clone version would have sat right into the diagonal wiring channel, so I needed the typical p90 mounting setup - another reason to do away with the magnet adjustments.

I know Zhangbucker (among others) has a regular rod/polepiece magnet p90. You might even get him to make one with larger diameter rod too to approximate the volume of magnetic material. It would have the upside of being 'any rout' friendly.

I'll have to check the depth of the route then. I just had James wind me an alnico staple type Melody Maker pickup for my '60 MM. I also purchased a cool p90 dogear (early '50s p90) from him.

Gorgeous guitar btw. Did you build that one?

Yep....that one became effectively my first LP build.

These two were built together.......but I always did the Custom first for each step as it was going to be black and any minor flaws/mistakes would be covered.

Damn. I would have not known it was your first build lol. Looks amazing. Do you have A5s or A3s in your build from James. I know the SD custom shop uses A5s.

Sorry to hijack audiocheck, but p90 and strat neck pickups are some of my favorite. I really don't care for single coils in the bridge.

Re: who's using a Staple or Phat Staple?

I'm pretty sure its A5......mainly as the reduced magnet size in mine makes the general strength of the mag type more important. I think James made the mags longer to somewhat account for the reduced depth.

It's a possibility...(heh heh)...

Re: who's using a Staple or Phat Staple?

I have a Duncan staple in neck position on a Les Paul Custom; it's fabulous. Same ballpark as P90 neck tone (which I love) but with a little more glass & chime and a bit less growl & snarl. I agree that it's like a P90 who wanted to be more Fendery and took two steps in that direction. Paired with an Zhangbucker Honk90 at the bridge, great combination.

I bought one of the original '54 reissues when Gibson came out with 'em in'74. Loved that guitar even though it was super heavy and had tiny frets. It was stolen many years ago and I'd missed it ever since. Finally I have something that's similar in sound & feel, just two pounds lighter and with nice medium-jumbo frets. It isn't all mahog; there's a maple cap under the lacquer. It is a long tenon neck, though- very lively, which ranks high on my list of personal priorities.

Not as valuable a guitar as the '74 would be by now, but it suits my present tastes better than the old one would have.

Took the plunge and ordered a neck pickup (staple) for my Koa 356. Can't wait.

Am I the only one who actually feels uncomfortable looking at lefty guitars? It really messes with my eyes lol

Anyway, I had some Phat Staples for a bit, I dug them but ultimately sent them on their way because they weren’t what ‘metal me’ liked. I’ll try them again, one day. In gold.

Beautiful guitars but you flipped the templates upside down!
(Seriously though, beautiful guitars. )

Re: who's using a Staple or Phat Staple?

I got the pickup installed. Still tinkering with the pickup height. How do you guys have your phat staples set? I can definitely hear the p90/strat influence. The clarity these pickups have is an understatement.
