Who's using sh-1 59's

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

Can't go wrong with the '59 in either position, but if you find the '59 neck too muddy, go with a Jazz.

+1. The '59 set is great. I've always liked '59s in the neck of just about any guitar, but a Jazz works really well if you like things a little brighter and with more clarity.
I had never tried a '59 bridge model until I got a Jackson Mark Morton signature model last year (it's got a '59 set with four-conductor wiring and two coil-split switches), and the sound is really sweet.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

bluesman 335 how do figure out the pickup. What it is?

Heritage uses a lot of Schaller PU's; does it have a make & model on the base plate? See what you can find out online. I have Schallers in a couple guitars & think they're high quality with good definition.

With or without that info, you should figure out the resistance (ohms), magnet, & pots. Listen closely & determine exactly what qualities you don't like about it. I'd try an A5 magnet in it (whatever it has now), and 500K pots if it doesn't have them. See what that does. May solve the problem right there.

If tweaking doesn't do it, then look for a high-quality PU with characteristics that would take you in the direction you want to go. You say it's too dark now; that should rule out most, if not all PU's with A2 magnets. A higher resistance will make a PU darker (everything else being equal). You'll probably be heading towards a low output A5 or ceramic neck HB, like a '59N, JazzN, Dimarzio Bluesbucker, PAF, or a HB from Hell. With a Phat CatN, you can swap out one or both of those A2's and really brighten that, more than any HB.

Take this in logical steps, & don't use a shotgun approach. This is your guitar, your tone. You make the decisions.

Bluesman335
The neck pickup is the Heritage HRW pickup and the bridge is a sh-1b 59. The HRW is the dark one and I looked at the Heritage site to see if I could find some information about but I couldn't see any specks for it.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

You could probably sell your HRW neck pickup for a decent amount, so I wouldn't do any magnet swapping on it.

See what it's worth used online (eBay, etc). I'd still try a magnet swap or two myself, but you may want to sell it & get a low output A5 neck HB instead (used for $40-$50), or a Phat CatN (probably new).

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

I'd say go for the '59. They're being used to great satisfaction on all the Heritage 150 Pauls. HRW pickups are in fact Schallers, but with some tweaks from Rendall Wall, the Heritage tech man. Have you tried the Heritage Owners Club? They're a friendly bunch and you might run into somebody who has some experience with your particular guitar.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

I just talked to Randell at Heritage and he would not tell me anything about the pickup, but he was very helpful and wanting to help and he said the A5 would be different.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

I had a set of SH-1's that came in my LP Custom.

OH.MY.GOD.

What a cheesy set of pickups. They sounded terrible, dull, lifeless. I hated them. I took them out ASAP. They are some of the worst pickups Duncan makes, and I can't understand why anyone would want them in a Les Paul. You're deaf if you like them.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

Wow, that is some special experience you had there, Jimmy... Many users love these p.u.'s so it may be the special character of your Gibson, your amp, your playing style or your taste. I mean, all these satisfied users, including the developers of the SH-1 can't be deaf, can they?

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

I went to your website nice site and the guitars sound killer even the 150 with 59's and I can hear!

???? I don't know if this even really justifies a response.

Just because YOU don't like something for whatever kind of music you're playing doesn't mean that those who do like it are are "deaf". It's Seymour's flagship pickup fer cryin' out loud. I don't think he'd still be in business if only "deaf" people liked it. I'm certainly not deaf (although I'm getting there..) and I think 59s are one of the best-ever pickups in a Les Paul.. I'm sure many others agree.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

The stock set of '59's in my Hamer Monaco Elite Mahogany (all mahogany LP style) sound amazing. The pickups really bring out the tone of the guitar. They're bright but not harsh. The bridge unit is crunchy but clear.

I also have a Hamer Artist Korina (semi-hollow double cutaway LP style) with a stock pair of 59's. As in the Monaco Elite, they bring out the tone of the guitar. Being a hollow body, the tone is completely different. The sweetness of the pickups is still there but being a semi-hollow body the tone has less bite, is smoother and mellower.

Either guitar is great for blues or blues-rock. The solid body Monaco Elite is great for hard rock. It's very crunchy, without the compressed dynamics you get with a lot of higher output pickups.

I hope this is a joke.

Thanks, bluesboy. I read you are a 50+ boy like myselves. Probably we share some similarities in tonal upbringing.

Re: Who's using sh-1 59's

My family came from the Netherlands and I have always wanted to visit, maybe if I do we can sit down and play some great guitar together.
