Does anyone know why Seymour Duncan recommend .047 caps for humbuckers? I'm just really curious, because everywhere you read about cap and humbuckers everyone seems to recommend .022 and .015 caps.:?:

Personal Preference...!!!!

There is no one correct answer to cap values. Try one. Don't like it? Try another. Caps and wire are cheap.

This is why you should own decent quality soldering gear.

Someone else can better elucidate the differences of capacitor values.

Re: Why .047 cap???

I know how caps work and what they do. My personal preference are .015 and .022's. I'm more curious how or why Seymour Duncan decided to recommend.047 caps. Is .047 something that Gibson did back in the day or was it something else?

Re: Why .047 cap???

Or it could be a typo......or a cut and paste error.

I've had up to .1uf caps for certain humbuckers in certain guitars for the bridge posi. In that case it was to remove a specific section of treble bite without having to drop down the tone control too low and take out other things.

Re: Why .047 cap???

So it appears to be a just cause reason I can live with that.

Question though, what size caps where installed on the late 50's early 60's les pauls originally? Or was it what ever they had at the time sorta thing?

Re: Why .047 cap???

My guess is Seymour put his humbuckers into a Tele harness originally which would have had 250k pots and a .047 cap and that number just stuck in his drawings over the years.

Re: Why .047 cap???

when i started really getting into guitar in the 90's thats what everyone recommended. .047 for buckers and .022 for singles, but things were quite different music wise back then. i think .022 is a good all around cap value for tone controls and going up or down from there is more about taste and rig. if you are running a jcm900 and 4x12 loaded with 75's then a .047 might be the perfect value

It's sort of like how they recommend you change motor oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles; it's just made up numbers intended to answer a question before someone has to ask.

The bees were .022 nominally. Quite a few have drifted high over the years. The pots also have drifted high in value too in many cases. ts not unusual for those old centralabs to be 600K or so.
