Why a Lespaul?

I love the look of the Gibson Lespauls. I haven´t have the chance to buy one because It means a lot of money but doing an effort saving money I can. I have never play one, just an epiphone one. For now I have an Ibanez rg570 with 59n&jb it sounds great. But which is the magic of a gibson lespaul? Why a really heavy guitar it´s a symbol in music life. Of course they look great but what more?

Thank you.

Re: Why a Lespaul?

The lead sounds from an LP is something of legend is the reason so many of us get them. But more than anything else I'm sure it's clever marketing. :)

Not to :hijacked: but I sold mine though. I just am not a fan of Gibson these days. I ended up picking up a Heritage (made in the old Gibson Kalamazoo factory) used for less than half of what a Paul sells for new. It was everything I ever wanted from a Paul.

Re: Why a Lespaul?

LPs have a certain magical quality to them. There are many copies and variations floating around (some of which are amzing guitars in their own right), but nothing captures the LP mojo like an authentic Les Paul (to be fair, even some of Gibson's own LPs fall short in the LP Mojo). It's mojo, man. I'm not quite sure how to explain that.

That said, I've played some very nice Epiphone LPs that measured up to your average Gibby. I've also played some Gibson LPs (with a price tag that would make my credit card choke and gag) that played like butter. If it's an authentic LP you crave but don't have tons of cash laying around, I suggest looking into a high end Epi, such as the Custom, or budget gibby such as the Studio model (which in my opinion is NO different than a Gibson LP custom or standard, outside of some fancy inlays and laborious finishes).

I just love them! Fat sounding piece of wood! Sexy looks, as well!

Just try one, and you'l know if it is for you.

I don't own a real one. Heck, not even a copy now. But I've played the real deal - one from the 70s. This is what I recall feeling: with most guitars, you play them. You are in control. With a real LP, it is so heavy, so sturdy, and so smooth, you almost feel like the guitar is playing you. It is in control. You feel like it's a little too much to handle. I think it's that feeling that when you bend a string, the whole guitar doesn't move because it's so dense, only the string does. I don't know how else to describe it.

When i played some standards they did have some unexplainable thing about them compared with any other guitar i played. Dunno if it was the guitar or it was simply some excitement in my head about it being a Gibson (first and only time ive played one). Also lets face it, a lot of people play them, and chances are, a few of them maybe one of your idols:)

Re: Why a Lespaul?

It's a magical piece of wood. The shape, wood types, and construction techniques all lend themselves to a proven tone formula. It's a time-tested design.

Re: Why a Lespaul?

Why? Because people are sheep. Check your history books for confirmation.

You can get just as good of a tone for much less with a guitar that's 3 times as playable. Of course, this is IMO.

Re: Why a Lespaul?

There is nothing wrong with the Epiphones IMHO. I bought one recently and its quickly becoming a favorite. I wasn't exactly sure that a Paul would be for me, but this one is.

Re: Why a Lespaul?

There is something about the low end chunk and singing mid-range of a LP that's unique. There are lots of other nice guitars available, some I like more, but none really like a LP. On the down side, LP's tend to be heavier than I like and are generally uncomfortable for me to play when sitting. I used to gig with a lawsuit era Japanese LP, and I now have a Gibson LP Studio and LP Classic. The Studio is lighter than most Standards, but it's still bottom heavy -- real nice thick tone though. The Classic is about as light as most of my Fenders and very well balanced, and also sounds great (brighter than the Studio). If you look around you're bound to find a nice one eventually.

I see definite truth in this

Re: Why a Lespaul?

I just like the fullness of the sound. Nothing is lacking at all. As far as the weight factor I don't find it to be uncomfortable. Mine's 9 lbs. but it does'nt feel cumbersome at all.

Re: Why a Lespaul?

the feeling and sound of a guitar doesnt come mainly from the headstock.

if you like epi, why not? go ahead and knock yerself out.

I need to make a couple points here.

1. When they made this guitar, they were concentrating on oen thing...TONE. they sacrificed a little bit of comfort to make this guitar. But IMO it is the most gorgeous sounding thing/instrument you will ever play.

2. I own an Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Standard Plus, and let me tell you this thing is absolutely gorgeous. Closest you will EVER get to a real Les Paul. I'm gonna swap the pups out for some SD's (IMO SD > Gibson pickups) After that i would NOT hesitate to say that this is a better guitar then a stock Gibby

Re: Why a Lespaul?

By reading your emotional describes of the sound I know I want one.
