Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
What the heck makes these things go for $50+ on the bay????

I just don't get it.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

I have no clue either. I haven't been actively pricing them as I'm gonna build mine, but there's bound to be way better trems for less out there.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

ugh, just looked. I'm sort of surprised at the prices. Time to start the Tremulus Lune project.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

Have you priced any REAL trem?

It takes a lot of skill and patience to train the tiny rodent operating the volume knob in there to respond to knob settings accurately.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

I have a Diaz Tremodillo; There is no need for anything else. Still, it just baffles me. There are a crap ton of these things available, and expensive! At least for the complete lack of awesome that they are....

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

I think TR-2s are cheap for what you get. $50 for a tremolo that will last forever and give you pretty much any sound you'll need. Since it has a wave shape control, you're not locked into a particular type of tremolo sound. It will do woozy swells AND it will do helicopter chop. It has a good buffer (which I'll take over true bypass any day) and its footswitch won't require replacing every year or so of its life.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

It's Boss, they're known for decent sound and extra decent reliability. I can't name one other big manufacturer of pedals that builds their stuff as bullet proof and I've got a small graveyard of tiny boxes and rack units to prove it. I've only lost two Boss pedals over the years and both went at the same time a One Spot died. I still think the One Spot killed them and I haven't used one since. I just don't trust it.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

I've replaced flaky flip/flop switches on six boss pedals in my lifetime. They're well engineered pedals, but not every part will last you forever with regular use.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

I wouldn't pay anything for a pedal that doesn't even give you full volume half the time.

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

I paid $45 used for a TR-2 and never once thought it was "expensive".

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

$50 for a good used BOSS pedal is a bargain. I remember having to buy them new for $100+ because the only ones you could find used were trashed, and the guy selling them wanted $10 less than new so he could buy a new pedal with minimal OOPE!

Re: Why are Boss Tremolos so expensive?

Lots of ups and downs with tremolos.

(Tremolo Humor thread? Hmmm)

I guess. But the volume drop is just annoying. I just never found anything interesting about them. STill, can't hate on general Boss quality.
