A new 65 reissue (in poplar now rather than basswood) is 700 bucks on ebay, I rebuilt a vintage one from parts for about that much... Used I'd call $500 (for a 69 or 65 reissue) par.

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

For me it the way they fit against my body. Its comfortable in almost any position for me. I also prefer most of the necks over most LP types and the rounder radius work for me too. But to each his own. You're still in your honeymoon, give it some time. You may go back and forth for a long while before you determine a definite favorite.

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

i'm already thinking of doing some upgrades, pups, hardwear. maybe switching to an american trem bridge, and a bone nut.
i wasn't only talking about me i was hoping to get the impressions of those Strat owners out there. why do you like your strat

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

Ahhh the almighty strat. I gotta say I'm in pretty much the same boat as yourself! I couldda swore I was a die hard LP guy, then after a few years I bought a strat and spent a lot of time with it until I hardly play the LP anymore. I haven't played the thing in weeks, the strat is soooo addictive hahahaha. For me, it was the sounds I could get out of it. My main band plays funk, soul, fusiony/jazzy stuff and blues and the strat beats the LP IMO (especially for the pop/R&B type stuff) in all of those categories. Just can get that thinner clean sound. Plus they just feel great. idk, EVERYTHING about the strat just wows me every time I play it.

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

I've played many Strats, and many Gibsons. Years ago, my Strats usually had a hot bridge HB pup, such as a DMZ X2N, or a SD Invader.

Recently, I purchased a Strat from a friend, mid and neck are Fralin Vintage Hots, bridge is a Steel Pole, not sure if it is a 42 or 43. It is incredible. For the first time ever, I have this incredible array of sounds, regardless of the amp. Crazy!

I have a Hamer w/C5b and 59n, and it also is incredible, but there is no way it can cover the sonic real estate that the Fralin pup Strat can.

I would emphasis the pups here. Most stock Strat pup material has not worked for me, and I've owned several. However, the guitar is a brilliant design, so very accommodating to different styles of pups.

To be fair, Leo may not have envisioned people modding this sucka as much as they did!

i know what you mean. i've been playing LP's for 10 years and i swore i would never get a strat. in fact i made fun of people who had strats. i saw them as generic and un original. maybe i'm just getting old.

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

Why? becuase they slam an icepick into your ear ?
Try my ash strat. Its so trebly it'll make you cringe.
I mean, at high volume, with a clean amp set with treble up andwith some bright toned speakers, you can forget it!

I've got Duncans too, and a one piece swamp ash and the best neck and electronics. Strats ARE great, but they have their limitations.
Maybe I need an Alder Strat.

turn the treble down :D

or a shorter scale might be part of the equation ;)

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

Hi

i have recently come back to playing Strats after a very long time of avoiding them. I bought my first Strat in the seventies at age 17. played it through a full Marshall stack and sounded like a very loud bag of $hit rather than like my heroes of the day. In the years that followed i owned a bunch of seventies strats and just couldn't sound like a Strat player. Mechanically they were all over the place and needed endless tweaking. I gravitated to Gibson and similar style guitars and suddenly sounded like a 'proper' player and it certainly felt like i had a properly-built musical instrument in my hands for the first time.

Years later i have realised that the Strats i owned came from the worst era of their manufacture and so i was behind the eightball to begin with. I have also developed enough technique to 'extract' the sounds from a Strat, and learnt that Fenders need to be 'worked at' to bring that sound out. However i also feel that the construction of the Stratocaster barely makes it into what i would class as a properly built musical instrument (ever seen an instrument in an orchestra with a bolt-on neck?)

HOWEVER.....now happily settled with a LP and a Hamer Studio Custom, i recently got a Tokai Silverstar Strat, copy of the 70's models, and it is far superior to the genuine ones i owned back in the day, particularly since i installed a Callham bridge and Bareknuckle pickups (3 x single coil). Even more recently i got back a Strat from a friend, it's a '69 that i sold to him back in about 1984, now sporting a very good Warmouth neck. Playing these 2 guitars has made me rediscover the beauty of the Strat...the sound. Both guitars have tight neck pockets, which seemed to be a rare thing on US ones in the 70's and caused me much frustration back then.
I am now in a position that i can play a Strat for it's SOUND, if i need rawk, i can play the humbucker equipped chunks of mahogany, and turn to the Strats when i want THAT sound. I still feel that Fender instruments are really a category of their own, and not on a par with well-made instruments, but no other type will get *those* classic sounds like a Strat or a Tele or similar bolt-on model. I also feel that there are better-made Strats from other manufacturers. Despite all i know and dislike about them, when they're right and stable, they feel so great to play and, with work, can sound incredible.

btw, i am a dedicated 3 single coil kinda guy when it comes to Strats, no humbuckers for me. I have rock guitars and finally i can celebrate the differences!

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

i was just kidding with my earlier post.

altho the singles in a strat type guitar a bit too bright for me. i got a different pickguard and put a hum sized p90 in the neck and a custom customw ill prolly go in the bridge eventually

You put a bright set of Duncans into a bright guitar with brighter body wood, bright toned speakers and turn your treble all the way up, and you're blaming the strat for being bright?

What did you expect? :scratchch:

I have a sunburst MIM Strat as well, and I love it. My ultimate workhorse, and the picture of versatility. I've installed locking tuners and strap locks, Odie refretted the neck with medium jumbos, and I replaced the stock pups with a set of Kinman Woodstock Noiseless.

The weight and shape are great for my frame and hands, and it's resonant even unplugged, so I know I got a good piece.

The best part is that my friend gave it to me for free! He said, "You'll play it a lot more than I ever will," and he's right. He played it for maybe five hours total, and I've had single days when I've played it for nearly double that amount of time.

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

I have been asking myself that for years! LOL! I always end up with a Tele in my hands!

strats sound good when everyone but me plays them.

+1...I traded my Strat for a '68 Bassman Amp and don't regret it one bit...the Strat was a bit too sproingy and quacky for me...Telecaster FTW ( in Fenders)

Gibson still rules my world.:beerchug:

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

Strats are awsome caus they can pull off many sounds, be modded really easily, personallised, and feel great. Plus they can take a beating and come back for more.

Imo, everyone needs a strat and a tele in their collection.

Agreed. I'll add a Les Paul to that list. I feel everyone should own, or at least have owned for a time, some kind of Strat, Tele and Les Paul. (Owning a 335 or something of its ilk isn't a bad idea either.)

I find the Strat to be the most versatile of the three, with the Tele and Les Paul standing on opposite but equally prestigious poles.

Re: Why are Strats so freaking awesome?!

A Strat is like an early 90's honda accord. it's kinda ugly and probably a weird color with something wrong with the finish, but it'll do everything you need to do and is totally utilitarian. And if for some reason it's lacking in one area or the other, it's not very difficult to do some quick mods and improve it.
