i'd say that you need a

gibson double hummer style - SG, yamaha SG series, LP, we
Gibson p90 style guitar - PRS soapbar, flat top, etc
tele
strat - which can include short scales. even tho the jag is kinda its own thing
and a semi/hollow which is more optional than mandatory.

i still need to get a gibby...but i've got two strat styles

i always say, you can make a strat sound close to a les paul, but you can't make a les paul sound like a strat.

I love both LP's and Strats, but if you put a gun to my head to choose, it's the LP. Or my 355.

My Strats do have to be true Strats, by which I mean 3 single coils -- no humbuckers. I might could be persuaded to go mini-hum in the neck but that's about it. I will do a Tele bridge pu in a Strat though.

the Jazzmaster is more its own thing than the Jag IMO, but hell, they both are. The JM is just fatter than most Fenders, and thus alienates itself lol.

My unabridged feelings on strats: I don't hate them, but I can't get excited over them because they seem to lack the little bit of extra character and functionality that I see in the Mustang in particular. Strats can sound great though.

I don't think there's any particular set of guitars people "need".

There is something about strats and single coil pickups. I have 10+ guitars but I bring a strat for band practice. When I am home, I experiment a lot with different guitars but when the moment comes, it's a strat.

I love my Strat because it was my first axe, and after putting the black moto pickguard and new wiring in it it just got better. Bodies are very comfy to play, as are the necks. They're just inviting, look cool and with the neck pickup on and tone dimed are some serious blues machines!! Nothing beats a Strat for blues IMO. I just need to replace the ultra-compressed lace sensor bridge with a JB Jr. which shall happen soon!

Although right now my Tele is taking up all the play time.

Glad to hear your loving your new Strat. MIMs are great guits for the coin and are way better in keeping consistent quality than Squiers or Epiphones. Not only that, they are THE ULTIMATE guitar for modding. The mod possibilities with a strat are endless!!

The thing is, if you don't like something about it you can usually mod it without major complications...and it's incredibly ergonomic and designed for comfort. It's super easy to set up. It's also incredibly light too, and since it has a pickguard you can actually have lots of pickguards if you're on a tight budget and swap them out real quick. If you have a EMG-ish quick connect you can swap them out on the go. Since I mentioned budget they're also incredibly affordable (MIM) and a set up away from being a great guitar.

Now that I remember, the other day I was talking to the new principal at school and he turned out to be a bass player...told me that in all the years he's been playing (My guess is about 30 or so years) his ears haven't really told him that MIA's sound better than MIM's. Catalogs and store sellers have been telling him that.
