Re: Why are Valveking 100s so dang cheap? Something really wrong with em I'm not seei

Every once in a while I search for my name and sometimes I am glad I did...other times I find threads like this.

I want to go on record right off the bat that I am 100% sure this thread is nothing except a troll having a good time but it looks like everyone else is answering and posting so I will to...

"Why are Valve King amps so dang cheap?"

They cost what they are worth, it's that simple.

If they were worth $1000 or $15000 or more believe me Hartley would ask it and if they were really worth it he'd get it but the fact is they are simply not worth that kind of money.

Now, let me say that I am not at all speaking to the sound of the amp in any way...if you like the tone of a Valve King then by all means buy one and enjoy it but from a business standpoint they use cheap materials and build them overseas with cheap labor and those 2 factors equal a cheap product.

It is that simple.

Peavey has always just suffered from marketing and branding issues.

The very first thing they should have done was redesign that terrible, budget looking spiky logo.

Now that their high profile endorsees have left (Ed and now Satch), they just don't have the marketing pull or brand prestige factor to make the everyday guitarist pay any attention to them. It's a bit of a shame - my Wolfgang is hands down one of the best guitars I've ever owned.

The VK series are meant to be pretty solid amps, so maybe if it spins your wheels it's time to grab a bargain!

The rep of "cheap" from the 70's and 80's was/is a problem but ignorance by players is more of an issue, the more recent USA made Peavey guitars were fantastic quality made with premium woods but they were not a LP, Strat or Tele so no one cared. Ditto the logo that says Gibson or Fender, if it ain't there people ain't buying. Same bad deal with the Hamer brand, Explorers and LP style guitars built with the quality and consistency Gibson should be putting out for the same or less money and no one bought them. I am actually surprised that PRS was able to carve out a niche in a market that is fairly myopic when it comes to product. I still think they borrowed the Hamer concept but who cares as they make great guitars.

^^^Agree on Hamer. The rest of your point is also well taken.

I had one for a little while. While it wasn't my dream amp, it sure beat the hell out of the SS marshall I was playing at the time. The tone was generic and uninspiring. I used it for as long as I needed it until I got my hands on a mesa .50 cal, then I sold it. It was a means to an end, a gateway amp if you will...

Since there's been enough 2 cents added to buy a couple of VK's I thought I'd add mine. Me personally, I only play amps that came out of Petaluma CA. That being said; I recently picked up my friends VK100 head from the shop for him. He kept going on about how the volume would cut out etc. My first reaction was "Oh yeah, one of those cheap Chinese Peaveys....." Turns out I'm pretty sure he was using a patch cable instead of a speaker cable to his cab. That or his cab is screwy. Either way, I played it though both of my cabs for a few days with zero problems (same result the amp tech had) and honestly I really enjoyed it! Was it as good as my Boogie? No. Wasn't expecting that out of it either. Bit less gain than a 5150 obviously but plenty of gain to do whatever and I liked the overall tone better. I could see a tube change improving it some but it was a pretty tight amp stock imho. Seemed to be less of a one trick pony than the 5150 I thought. I see them go real cheap used locally and I can see grabbing one up in the future when a good deal pops up.

I'm more curious if these new import Peavey amps are even half as indestructible as the old stuff made on Hartley Peavey Dr.
