why do good combos work?¿?

i mean...f.e. jb/jazz or custom/jazz

there is a rule for a combo that lets bridge and neck match with each other? like eqs (if one is midrangey focused the other has to be scooped?) resistance (if the bridge pup goes to 16k the neck has to keep near 7-8k? output (if one is going over 300v the other has to go to 200-250 or something?)

or it just that they match because of a divine intervention? (mmmm...have to listen to that record :laugh2: )

the practice example is....for a jackson all mahogany, neck trhu, 24 frets, ebony board, floyd rose, flame maple top...tone wizard sugested parallel axis distortion w alnico 2 pro (for hard rock/metal); but i don´t like alnico 2 humbuckers...so the next option should be the jazz that is alnico 5 and its similar...i also considered the full shred by many reasons, but:
both (patb-2 w sh-10) seem to be brigth/midrangey pups and both share tight low end...
that will make the overall tone to go shrill or harsh?
too much metal focused? i want that guitar to be ready for other styles as well (many of the forum owners say that both pups can be used for jazz also with a little work done over the tone knob)...

I think the combos work good, because they are more versatile, than let's say a combo with the same pickups.
If you have a hot bridge humbucker, you might also want a smoother or clearer pickup, so you put another pickup at the neck pos.
And a lower output neck humbucker doesn't mean a volume drop.
That might be a reason why some combos are popular.
I had a DD/Jazz combo in my explorer, but i'm gonny replace it with a custom/pearly gates combo, because the DD was too mid-focused and i want the neck pickup a bit meatier.
Beside this, both pickups have also a great clean tone, which make them versatile!

I think a combo works good: if both pubs soundg good under the same amp setttings!!

It's versatile if you just can switch between different pubs and they all work (with the definition above)!

I guess that absolutly right . I mean I can have two great sounding pickups at the bridge and neck that sound great on their own on the same guitar. But the amp settings need to be diff for each of them to sound great . For example Pick up (A) in the bridge sounds great with the bass up to 7, but Pickup (B) at the neck sounds muddy with the same seting . and then Pickup (B) in the neck sounds great with the treble at 8 but Pickup (A) in the bridge sounds too trebley. And then there is also the Volume to be considered.

Well i use a full shred neck in my jackson, and so far that has been my favorite pickup i have played through. I would almost consider it for the bridge, but i like bridge pickups with a tone like the JB (especially for leads). Ive been thinking about something else for the bridge cause im still not totally satisfied, but the full shred will be staying in the neck for some time. It sounds awesome split too, because its already a bright pickup.
