Why do i love these?!

Re: Why do i love these?!

Right now, the most similar guitar I have to these is my G&L Legacy Deluxe.
Last night, I put a nickel CC in the bridge position, along with the Fat 50's

Re: Why do i love these?!

One is 100% hand made, the other is for the most part off an assembly line. This also implies more care in the choice of woods and other materials, like for example custom pickups and hardware (or are Duncan ´78s and NOS Charvel Brass trems readily available where you are?? The Trem alone fetsches easily 300$ on eBay ;))

And if you ever played one, you´ll immediately notice that it´s NOT a Fender, Not a Warmoth, but something different. Something more solid, more resonant..... something sweeter, more unique.

Comparing it to a Tom Anderson, Custom Shop Fender, Suhr , Grosh or similar is fair.... But for some reason, nobody bitches around when they sell a trrat for 2k+.... the only difference is that Charvel has been doing this 10 years longer than anybody else  ;)

Again, a Charvel strathead has been many people´s holy grail for years, and the prices on an original are double this...the specs are nearly identical to what many consider the "classic" configuration.......ANd BTW, in "the day" they were starting around 1.7k..... so we have a price increase of 800$, because the Headstock had to be licensed out, the pickup was more expensive, and it´s a limited edition

Let´s see, if Gibson stopped making Les Pauls for 20 years, do you think people would still pay the same price when they were reintroduced?? Or woule everybody also say "Get a Warmoth?"

You guys like Warmoth, and that´s fine... But at some point in time you´ll also have to realize that not everybody cares for building their own guitars, nor has the skills to do so, nor wishes to acquire them. I think pro luthiers for the most part still buying their own guitars instead of parts axes says enough.

I can understand many of the arguments, but many of you also make it very obvious that you´ve never played anything higher than a mexico strat wiith your comments.... just accept it, if this is the case, you´re just plain not qualified to make comments about a high-end custom made USA guitar, because you simply at this time have no idea of the quality difference or where that difference comes from. I don´t mean this as an insult, BTW, just want to point it out. The general lack of knowledge about what makes a difference between assembly-line and custom made guitar is appalling... I´m very literally just waiting for someone to say: buy a Squier and fill 2 of the routs, exact same guitar...

Opinions and statements like these are one of the reasons I don´t build guitars anymore, and the main reason that I constantly ponder whether I ever want to again I´m not willing to deal with hobbled!cks on a daily basis anymore, and I honestly don´t feel that anybody really cares for quality anymore...this thread is living proof. :blackeye:

Point in closing: find me ANY Handmade USA Guitar with identical specs for less or similar.... Not a Warmoth, not a production Fender, no Indonesian BS...... I currently know of NONE on the market....

Re: Why do i love these?!

Those aren't my thing, but there is something overwhelmingly cool about a one pickup guitar.

Re: Why do i love these?!

imo, they look like they are missing something....i never liked the one pickup guitars......if that had a neck pup that would be hot!

Re: Why do i love these?!

Zerb, I agree with you. I'm just saying someone on a budget who wanted to do something similiar could go warmoth.

But yeah that bugs me too. There's this guy I know who's a super crappy guitar player too. He's got a Gibson Les Paul Classic, 3 humbucker that's set up like garbage. Anyway, he also has a Squier strat. he wired in some Dimarzios. He insists that if he just orders a Fender neck from their custom shop and put it on the Squier nobody will be able to tell the difference and it'll be the same.

Re: Why do i love these?!

i'm outta town for the next few days...but from what Zerb has said about this axe...i gotta play that guitar IF it's still there?!?!?!?!?!

this guitar is sweet!!! and if i EVER have the money...and i can find one...it's mine! i gotta feeling it's gonna be worth some dough in the future, plus if it plays and feels like it looks then...

Re: Why do i love these?!

yeah you guys are right. you just dun compare a very expansive guitar like that to a cheaper guitar of another price class. guitars or anything else cost more for a reason. people would pay for quality because they know its worth it for them.

*arguments about whether or not the price lies on the name on the headstock belong in another thread. we had way toooo many "are gibsons overpriced" discussions

Re: Why do i love these?!

I like these limited Charvels...... only thing i wish for to improve them is if the Bridge humbucker was not so close to the bridge..... Modern humbucker placement is a little farther away from were these Charvels have their Humbuckers.... Mind you that is the way they did it in 1978 and that is correct for a reissue.... Eddie never really enjoyed the tone of his Black and Yellow Charvel because of the humbucker being too close to the bridge.... I saw a photo of that guitar sitting in Ed's studio and it has a new gold Floyd on it.... The humbucker looks like it is touching the floyd..

Re: Why do i love these?!

The different Bridge humbucker placement is a part of what makes Jacksons and Charvels sound different, J/C has always placed them exactly there and when once asked by yours truly it didn´t seem like something they were about to change (for that reason) ;)

Re: Why do i love these?!

zerb, would you happen to know any other neck specs on these things? nut width, fretboard radius, etc?

EDIT: I see the nut width in the original post. I'm curious as to whether these had a rounded board like a strat or something flatter.

Re: Why do i love these?!

either 12" flat or 12-16 compound, not quite sure right now....It´s a 25th Anniversary CHarvel, not a 54 reissue Fender ;)

Would you mind a few more questions about this matter, you seem to be in the know and eager to help, which I appreciate greatly?

So is the bridge pickup closer to the bridge, like with an SG, or closer to the neck? How big a difference are we talking about, both in millimeters and sound? Is the neck pickup always in the same place with jacksons? Is RR-guitars' neck pickup located farther away from the bridge because of its 22 frets? Can I expect this from all 22 fret jacksons?

Thanks!

The bridge is moved about 5 mm compared to a Fet strat or similar, but I don´t have a "normal" guitar here fopr comparison so I can´t tell you right now ehether neck or bridge, I honestly can´t remember.....

????? I have no idea what you´re trying to ask me, sorry.....;)

Re: Why do i love these?!

Didn't Charvel/Jackson start moving their humbuckers farther away when they started to use Floyds? My pair of 1994 Dinky's have their humbuckers moved forward compaired to what i see in the picture of this reissue with a vintage style trem and a single humbucker. Same with my 1987 Model one which has a single humbucker and a vintage style trem. There is more wood between the bridge and pick up then what i see in that photo of the reissue.

When i rout out Fender pickguards for humbuckers, i like the humbucker sitting with the top adjustment screw sitting in the old single coil screw hole... that placement is darn close to my Jacksons..... Fenders american deluxe strats with humbuckers over the last 15 years have been routed out in that same sweet spot.

Some companies like their pickups placed closer to the bridge. Replacement Tele bridges with humbucker slots have the pickup much closer to the bridge as well but that is cool as with a tele you want more twang. WD pickguards have their pickguards for strats with humbuckers routed too close to the bridge for me...

I mean the placement of the neck pickup. As an RR has only 22 frets while other Jacksons such as SL, KE etc. have 24 frets. Isn't the RR fretboard shorter than the others? So, is the neck pickup right next to the end of the fretboard or in the same place as on the other guitars (with 24 frets)?

Re: Why do i love these?!

AH... Neck pickups are at the fretboard end, always....when you look at pics closely it becomes pretty clear.

I know thewt J/C started placing them where they do very early on, it may well have something to do with the Floyd becoming available, I´ll look into it and see what I can find out ;)
