Why do you buy new instead of used?

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

Ah, also thought of something else! I buy new because I am a whore for new products that are not on the used market yet, and my impatience gets the better of me.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

I like to buy used whenever possible. I think guitars sound better when they have been played a lot.....that break in time is something that I'd rather leave to someone else.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

Interestingly enough, other than my first guitar/amp I have only bought one guitar and one amp new. Even pedals are about 50/50. The guitar I bought in Japan and I new I was going to buy it going there and the amp was obnoxiously discounted at GC, cheaper than the same amp used!

I do think of that as well but IMO getting it there is half the fun, certainly not sth I'd like someone else to have instead of me.
On the other hand I do have guitars that were built 15 or so years ago, one of them seriously distressed (but in a good way) that I still think could use some adjusting time.

It's always a journey I guess...

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

I try to buy used whenever possible, but when I get a deal, such as my PRSi, I will jump on a new piece of gear.

The majority of my guitars I've bought were new. I've only bought one new amp, Bullet Reverb, and I no longer have it.

When you buy "new" from a store, you usually get something that's been played by a bunch of people anyways. I don't get hung up on people playing a guitar before me. People handle & play guitars at the factory. There are no virgins.

Somebody had to play the thing a while to make sure it even works to begin with, right?

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

Honestly...paying "retail" sucks....there's an automatic cost savings of going to the "secondary market" for products (in most cases...limited edition collector items aside)...kind of like the depreciation of driving your newly purchased car off the lot.

Also, I like old/used guitars w/some mojo to them, as several others have stated...but...after buying used for a number of years, I resorted to "project guitars" in 2003...so I buy individual parts, piece by piece, to have my guitars assembled exactly the way I want them to be. Usually starts w/one cool piece and then I build around it.

This one started w/the "SRV" Pickguard, which was a Birthday Present from my wife...

This one was a necessitated body replacement when the old one split...but the guitar had been a $250.00 Pawn Shop Purchase to begin with and I scored the body on eBay for $90.00...

This one started with a Kramer E.E. Pro I Neck that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED and was determined to use...NOS Kramer SC-3 Body was another eBay purchase...

And now...I found this Kramer Maple Board Neck on CL, picked up the One Piece Ash Body on eBay...and I'm off and running on this project...

This one...well...I played it once and it was THE LES PAUL that I'd always wanted...so I lucked out on finding it on eBay a week after it sold from my local MGR before I could purchase it...and at a time when I could actually afford it and "mentally justify" the purchase! :)

so...there you go...that's my take on it all!

For me, it's because when I buy big tickets items (like my PRS or my Mesa), I want the lifetime warranty that comes with it.

I've been playing for over 20 years... and I've never once had to make a warranty claim on a guitar or had something go horribly wrong with a quality used instrument. Same with amps and the recording gear which NEVER have a lifetime warranty.

Stuff breaks & needs adjustment... sure. I had an American Std. Strat where the body cracked after about 12 years but that was because it was a shop guitar for a while. It was left in a warehouse during a Massachusetts winter where the heat was shut off at night & weekends. That's the only significant problem I've ever had with a guitar and likely could've been prevented anyway.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

I ususally buy new because I don't see a lot of great deals on craigslist. And I'm not really picky about this, but I like the fact that the fingerprints, sweat, saliva, and blood that get on the guitar are my own.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

I buy the item I want... if some guy down the road has it and can save me some cash I'll get used, especially guitars. I don't pamper mine so they're going to get bruised anyway so slight dents and dings are fine as long as the neck is good (don't like dings or dents down the back of the neck).

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

Every guitar I've ever owned, I bought used. Except for my first guitar, a cheap acoustic my parents bought me. Never had a problem with any of them.

I guess amps and effects are a different story. All my pedals except my Phase 90 are new. My current amp I bought used. The amp is older and the clean channel doesn't work. The Phase 90 has stoped working. So that says something about that. The components of amps and effects are much more complex, more things to go wrong, as opposed to guitars.

I always try to buy things used. Overall, they're cheaper. That's really the only reason to buy used over new. Also, if you troll for used gear you can find valuable discontinued stuff, like my fender. And eventually they become far more worth than what you paid.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

because with used, its likely that the previous owner has played the guitar immediately after whacking off or something

I never thought of that before:laugh2:
I do however, know a guy that literally got semen on his guitar because he had his guitar in his bedroom and he didn't put it in the case and he managed to get some on the body of the guitar:laugh2::laugh2:

First thing you do is clean & polish them, and change strings. Using fretboard conditioner is a good idea too. At a minimum, there's dirt, oil, & sweat on them, new or used. These things aren't built in a vacuum.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

I buy new because this town sucks, and nothing good is to be had. And for paying 700 bucks, I definitely don't want something someone else has possibly messed stuff up inside.
