Why does my worn WLH cover look like brass?

Re: Why does my worn WLH cover look like brass?

Seymour Duncan does use chrome plated brass covers on many if not most of their pickups, including humbuckers and Tele neck pickups. I wouldn't assume they have used nickel silver unless the pickup is expressly spec'd that way, and even then I would be wary.
This is false. How did you reach this conclusion? Do you have some kind of evidence of which we're all unaware? There are a few brass covers for vintage correctness, but most of what you'll get from Duncan are nickel silver. But I'm particularly interested in the part where you say that even if Duncan claims a cover is made of nickel silver, that you would be suspect? Suspect of what, that it's a lie? Or that someone carelessly ordered the wrong material?

...I'm sure the reason SD uses brass is because the difference is barely perceptible anyway, few people are complaining.
You'll have to retract this part as well. Duncan isn't using a cheaper cover "because people aren't complaining".

As usual, you talk about things your don't know nothing about.

Duncan uses NICKEL-plated brass covers only on tele neck p'ups because is vintage-correct. The humbucker covers are NICKEL-plated or gold-plated nickelsilver and the aged ones raw nickelsilver
Ibis, listen to Kojak on this one. But also...

The cover of my Whole Lotta Love bridge humbucker is getting pretty worn and...
Next time please tell us "I sanded through the plating, because I wanted to clean the tarnish and achieve the brushed look..." Because the way you phrased this, it would sound like Duncan used cheap or thin plating method, or that you're warning others that Duncan's playing wears off.

If you've asked this question on other forums you might want to edit them, so that it doesn't cast a negative light on Duncan's covers or plating.

My posts edited according to your wishes Frank. I'm ordering raw covers from now on since nickel plate and I don't coexist peacefully. Lesson learned, and a little metallurgy too.

Where will you order them from? I'd like some raw nickel covers too.

I like the look and my Custom Shop Pearly Gates sets have the raw nickel covers.

The raw nickel looks better on my twenty or thirty year old guitars.

Probably Axesrus if/when I get around to changing them, considering the recommendation here. I'll see what the next round of gigs does to the existing covers. I've never had raw covers. All my pickups are chrome, open or badly corroded gold or nickel. Seems I can take care of guitars except for the hardware.

They'll look fine. They won't be as mirror bright and shiny as your bridge or chrome parts though.

Here's my CS PG's with raw nickel covers:

I get mine from Philadelphia Luther, as well as a lot of other stuff. If you want them shinier, get some Meguiar's metal polish at an auto parts store & they shine up pretty quick. They do have some fine pits & such, that's probably as much why they copper plate them as anything.

The were a perfect fit, 52 mm bridge 49.2 mm neck. Soldered really easily.

Apologies for the humbucker rings, the pickguard was not cut to accommodate Gibson pickups and after filing the edges were too rough. So until i get my replacement pickguard the rings hide a bit if a messy filing job!
