why does SD not offer some of the pickups in colors other than black?

I have a white ibanez jem and i really want to put in a Pegasus and sentient set and maybe a cool rails in the middle which is available white. But not the other two. Why is this? I don't really want to have to pay custom shop prices for a pickup i didn't design just because i want it white to match my guitar. I stubbornly refuse to go dimarzio just because of their color variety availability but i may be missing something here. Any info on that? I've had seymours in all my guitars for fifteen years or so but you know how it is..you want your tone but you want your guitar looking good too

Well, its mostly to do with sales - the desire to manufacture pickups in colours that people will actually buy.

Small runs of colours cost more - thats just economies of scale. So Duncan have to be really sure they will sell before deciding to manufacture any 'not black' bobbin pickups.

And in some cases it is just impractical (or silly) to make 1 of something just for a customer who decides they want their own odd colour....custom shop notwithstanding

The Pagasus and Sentient are supposed to carry a mythical theme, so the color choice was deliberate. They also have smokey chrome screws and slugs.

^ Bobbin colour is for standard spaced humbuckers only

I've used Trembuckers in 'standard' spaced Gibsons; can't do that the other way around?

(Sorry, I haven't owned a shred stick since 1989, so I have to ask)

^ No idea. But if the pegasus and sentient are a TB only pickup design then the colour bit might not apply.

Pickups can be ordered in many different colors...take a look at this page to see what is available. Just order the color you want from your dealer.

From that page:
2. Bobbin color. For standard-spaced humbuckers only. You can choose from any combination (except Double Crème) or single color from the following: Black, White, Crème, Red, Dark Blue, Light Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green.
When I was there they still hadn't ordered Trembucker bobbins in the custom colors. It was black/white/zebra as I recall. Is that still the case? I think (aside from Rails pickups) that's what some people here are referring to. You can't Shop Floor Custom any pickup that uses the Trembucker bobbin in colors like red, blue, etc. those would have to be full Custom Shop where MJ dyes the bobbins to custom colors.

Well, that means we do offer them, you're just gonna have to pay for it.

I fixed that.

Off topic but color related... Ive been using Duncans for 15 years now but never realized he didnt do double cream, im sure its common knowledge around here but I dont know why he would nix that combo.

Re: why does SD not offer some of the pickups in colors other than black?

^ Dimarzio holds the TM for doublecream (despite it being a Gibson 'invention').

Question.

I have a Jackson Stealth XL loaded with a set of EMG 81/SA/SA pickups. Love the guitar, but the SA pickups are really low output (surprisingly).

Now the guitar routes are EMG shaped, as in they don't have the sticky-out V part at the bottom. Also the wire that comes out of the SA comes out the bottom. It means that the EMG SA pickups fit perfect, but any SD or DiMarzio single coil sized pickup doesn't given the sticky out V and the wire that comes out the front of the pickup instead of the bottom.

I'd love to put a set of SDs in there, namely a Custom (a standard will fit) and two Hot Rails in the neck and middle positions.

I was told by my dealer here in the UK that the hot rails would be full custom shop orders. I aborted mission at being quoted £275 for the two pickups. But reading this page, it seems that option 11 (oval vs V shape bottom plates) seems to be a shop floor option.

Are shop floor custom options extra charges? Or are they standard cost? Also, would moving the pickup's exit to the bottom of the pickup instead of the side (the way Hot Rails used to come way back in the day) really mean it's a full custom shop instead of shop floor custom?

Feel free to PM if I'm not making sense, can provide pics.

You will have to ask your dealer to get prices for you, as they probably change by location. But this seems possible. Pickups like Hot Rails should fit- I've done it before (replacing EMGs), but I am not sure of the particulars of your guitar.

It's that one basically. The routes for the neck and middle single coils are pretty tight. I have a hot rails I got off eBay which has the standard V shaped bottom to it. The rounded part fits into the cavity fine, but if the wire comes out of the front then it would be a problem. While it looks like the oval plates aren't an issue, I'm just wondering would switching the wire's location to somewhere else, such as on the Quarter Pound, would that mean it's a full on custom shop as opposed to just a shop floor custom?

Most Hot Rails don't have the V shaped bottom (mine don't), and should work. So would Duckbuckers, Cool Rails, etc.
