Why doesn't gibson make more blue guitars?

Re: Why doesn't gibson make more blue guitars?

Slow or insufficient sales. In short, money.

The guitar store that used to be in my town had a Gibson LP Studio Lite MIII. This remained displayed on the wall forever - possibly because customers were wary of Gibson taking such an unusal departure, possibly because that specific guitar was a lousy example, possibly because it was opaque dark blue with black hardware. Probably all three.

goldtops and sunbursts, natural wood or black are kinda classics. most ppl can only afford one gibson, so they get classic, versatile colors. Blue is way cool, but probably more for the kind of player who has heaps of axes (like collectors or rock stars) and there are just not that many people who are in that category. Yeh - lake placid blue lester would be rad tho!

As much as I feel like I SHOULD like the blueburst ES-135...I don't.

Re: Why doesn't gibson make more blue guitars?

Same reason Fender doesn't make many. As much as guitar players like to think they're creative and different they really like old and comfortable. This means lots of brown wood, black and white. And that's about it.

They did for a while, but more people just want the classics, and blue ain't in the paint roster.

Re: Why doesn't gibson make more blue guitars?

That goes for reds & greens as well. Aesthetically, my old 83 sparkle red "custom shop" standard was my fave Les Paul. I love a washed cherry burst, or black standard, or lemondrop as much as the next guy, but yeesh.

Most of the buying public is lame, thats why! :D

The other thing is that when Gibson usually DOES a blue/green or whatnot- they do it in conjunction with other wierd specs that makes the models unpopular- Like the flood guitars, or the old elegants or whatever they were called.

I love blue guitars! It's the main reason I jumped all over this baby.

And if I was ever in the need of a semi hollow I'd be drooling over that es-137 blue burst.

Not quite. Red is a popular color for Gibson's, like on SG's, Firebirds, and 335's. Blues and greens are the ones in short supply; I'm sure they'd make more of those if they sold as well as the other colors. The demand doesn't seem to be there.

Re: Why doesn't gibson make more blue guitars?

I don't mean Cherry Red see through, Rick- that's obviously a vintage color and in demand. You are right about the 335s though. I think for Firebirds, the big color is still Sunburst. But I was specifically talking about Les Pauls, should have clarified.

I wonder had Clapton & Page played a crimson red Les Paul (assuming availability) would bursts even be in demand these days? I doubt it.

I can't say I'd ever thought about about it, but I guess they don't do so many do they. It's a shame really, as I could see people taking quite a liking to something like this Tokai of mine. I know it's not a Gibson, but it's one of their design to all intents and purposes. I think it looks pretty cool.

Clapton did play a red Les Paul. Obviously not a lot or it might have been more popular but the Les Paul that Clapton played and then gave to George Harrison (the guitar's name was Lucy) and subsequently Clapton played on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was a red Les Paul.

I didn't say Fender didn't make any. Hell, I own one even. Nor do you need to look for a pic of every blue Fender ever made since the dawn of time. My point is that it's a very rare color. Aside from a few vintage blues available on a limited number of guitars, currently it's not made. But I guarantee whatever it is they'll make it in sunburst, white and black.
