Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

I am thinking of changing out the Dimebucker in my Charvel Basswood Start to a Full shred. Can you tell me why you do not like the Dimebucker? I would love some opinions.Maybe i should leave it in there,or maybe the fullshred would be better.

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

It's a very good pickup, especially for heavy styles, but that's not my style. I'm more of a blues player. I have grown to appreciate rails styles pickups though. For one thing I can bend a note and the string is ALWAYS over the polepiece and magnetic field. I think the Dimebucker is a more versatile pickup than it's given credit for. Why don't YOU like it??? I think it is a decent pup for its intended purpose. It is a bit harsh in the high end, but not horrible. I find that it isn't quite as expressive as other high output models like the DD.

what's wrong with the dimebucker? it's certainly not for everybody, but it's a good pup.

Im thinking its not as defined as the full shred would be. Its gets too syrupy-maybe too thick. I dont know.

It's a hot pickup...that's for sure. The hotter they get, the thicker they get.

and blades seem to change the attack which could be why it doesnt seem as defined

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

pole pieces have more pluck to them, but i dont think its a huge difference, but ya the fullshred would allow you to actually adjust yur amp settings a dimebucker is met to crank with an amp while a fullshred is lower output and would allow more toneshaping

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

a dimebucker isnt meant for anything but to be as in your face as possible, i just realized somthing the dimebucker has the same exact EQ of the blackouts, so i was right when i thought the dimbeucker is similar to the 81 in tone. I guess dime must have wanted the 81 sound but passive, i heard it differs a lot from the XL-500

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

IMO: No tone, all sizzle.

Yes, for me that was exactly how I felt about it in a nutshell! It had this annoying buzzsaw like treble to it, everything sounded fuzzy even with rolling the volume, and for me it was the most un-versatile. I can handle and I do like some high output pickups but, I found absolutly no redeming qualitys in this pickup. Hey, it might work great for some people but, I personally hated it.

BTW, I get along well with the Full Shred.

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

The Full Shred is a very 'tight' sounding pickup. It's somewhat 'HiFi' sounding, but I dig it. It acts a bit like a DiMarzio (very clean sounding with gain) but with more of the tonal warmth you'd expect from a Duncan. Could you give some examples of what you're trying to achieve tonewise?

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

I played one for the first time a couple of weeks ago, hated it. I play a lot of Thrash and Death Metal, but I like my mids cranked, and this PU seems pretty light on the mids, as I expected. It didn't sound "In Your Face" to me at all, the notes sounded buried under a ton of harsh fuzz and muddy low-end. It may have high output but tone wise it sounded really weak to me.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

the dime sounds great eq'd right , it was made to have a comressed squishy tone which dime wanted. it works great for legato and pinch harmonics. downtuned its great and in standard it great. the more you downtune though the chunkier it gets in open d its really chunky. but it has great cut in standard. its an awesome metal pickup but it excels in soloing, i dont think it has those toneful chords or super chunky chords people want. if you dont like the dimebucker i hear the x2n fills in the need. it has a lot more mids and a flat eq. i played it as well and its great too, but i like the uniqueness of the dime bucker. its really a shred pickup, with great sustain and harmonics. usually shred pickups dont fit with newer metal sounds out there. Dime was an old school shredder, pantera was actually a hair metal band when they came out.

Re: Why DONT you like the Dimebucker?

I had one in my V and really didn't like it, so I got an Invader and was much happier. I gave it to a friend and he put it in his Ibanez Iceman and I tried it out, and liked it a little better in that guitar, but not enough to want it back. Very needle-like highs and whatever mids there are are not a pleasant tone for my ear, the output is great, but for a scooped p/u it is very un-warm in tone to me. I also had a lot of low-end feedback with it, and when I re-eq'd to get rid of it I was unhappy with my tone. I have an xl500 I put in an old Hondo Destroyer, and that p/u is much more nasally than the Dimebucker.
