This pup always had a rep for having a certain mojo and even though some were magical some were real duds! Even though they varied greatly many pup winders went about making a replica of the real sweet ones.

the covers, definitely.

Ya know, people say there were duds, but to me they're like Bigfoot. People claim they exist but I or anyone I know has seen them.

I like the open sound a PAF has. They can be warm and still cut.

so you would take a $1000 gamble for a p.a.f on Ebay then?

Re: Why is the P.A.F so sought after?(P.A.F experts/lovers only please!)

PAFs can play anything short of extreme metal type stuff, and even then a 59 could probably do it if you had the chops. They're sweet and bright enough to play clean, and scream like a wildcat with a poker up it's a** when you turn it up. They allow sublety and nuance to come out of your playing, and consequently don't hide mistakes as well.

Hot pups can be fun, but they're one trick ponies, IMO.

Can you even buy one that cheap anymore? Thats a hard question because the specs DID vary, but I probably would if I had the money, but I'd much prefer to hear one beforehand. You also know it works then.

+1. So much great guitarwork has been done with them, rhythm & lead. What other PU can compare to the sheer volume of work?

Re: Why is the P.A.F so sought after?(P.A.F experts/lovers only please!)

Why is any of this junk sought after...I mean think about it...we use guitar amps that use vacuum tubes, we seek out pedals that are made with out dated transisters and op amps and worship pickups that are nothing more than a magnet and some wire...IT's BECAUSE OF THE SOUND!!!!

On the PAF front I've bene lucky enough to play several guitars with PAF in them both old and new and wil say this...first, there are several pickups that can be bought today that sound just as good if not better than real 50's PAF's...namely several models from Seymour Duncan.

Also, these dud PAF's get talked about much like dud 50's Las Pauls and even dud 50's Strats and Tele's however in all my time and after going to a lot of guitar shows and seeing, playing, using and even owning some vintage gear I've yet to find the dud PAF, the dud 50's Strat or the dud Plexi Marshall that guys talk about...truth is everytime I get the chance to grab an old guitar or amp it has something special. However like I said before...there are modern guitars, amps and even pickups that sound just as good as the oldies IMHO.

Not no but hell no...not because Im worried it'll be a dud but simply because for $1000 I could buy 4 SET's of Duncan Antiquities...if you've ever used a real PAF and if you've ever used a Duncan Antiquity then the deal of 1 pickup or 8 pickups for a thousand dollars is a no brainer!

This and they just plain sound good. They can play almost any kind of music with ease.(((Other than that stuff consdered music that some know isn't)))

Also what the guy above me said... I would not pay $1000 dollars for a single pickup just 'cause they make very good pickups now too and I could get 10 really good pickups made in the last few years or I get get 1 vintage PAF.

Do the ants sound as sweet as those? I ask because i see manx opting for these $500 a set pups over the $240 a set ants?

Many people unfortunately still equate higher price with better product. The more you pay, the better you get, including (somehow) such subjective ideals as "better tone".

But then, try to find someone to admit they spent that much for a pickup they don't like. If you spend THAT much, you make yourself like it.

Re: Why is the P.A.F so sought after?(P.A.F experts/lovers only please!)

IMO, Duncan makes the best PAF's. Do I believe the $1,000 sets sounds better? There's so much more that goes into that equation- like the guitar, the quality of the guitar, the wood, the amplifier, that I don't think there's a huge difference with the pickup when you go outside of Seymour Duncan's price range.

PAF's I find to be very versatile and capable of playing any type of music- sure it may fall a little short on death metal, but I think you could still pull it off with a PAF. They're pretty flat sounding EQ wise, so I can coaxe any tone out of them.

I have owned bad ones- namely the PAF's out of a 1986 Les Paul Custom were horrible- and Duncan 59's were a huge improvement- but I think Gibson used pots that tended to sound muddy.

That's true.

I've never A/B'd Ants and Holmes but both are amazing pickups for sure...I refuse to pay $500 for a set of Holmes pickups...my Ants are just fine at less than half the price...

Re: Why is the P.A.F so sought after?(P.A.F experts/lovers only please!)

I have a number of boutique PAF like pickups and I did actually find that the more expensive ones sound better. I don't have Holmes, but at the top of my list are the Seymour Duncan Custom shop items and the WCR Crossroads. I rate the Lollars a little below that and the Fralin substatially below it (around where SD's Seth is). I didn't like the WBs I had but that might have been more of an anormaly.

And I made the ranklist after buying these used and only later looked up the new prices, so it's not previous knowledge guiding perception.

Re: Why is the P.A.F so sought after?(P.A.F experts/lovers only please!)

I wonder how many players disregard pickups that don't include "P.A.F." somewhere in the name or description of a humbucker. It seems that every pickup maker in the world has to use that as a selling point for their products. Personally, I'd rather see someone come along and say "Hey, this is a decent pickup" without including those three letters somewhere in the review.
