Why isn’t the EVH Wolfgang Signature guitar more popular?

He played Steinbergers for awhile..... didn't make their sales pop, did it?

I like the Music Man better.

But my thought is that it isn't popular because it isn't the guitar EVH used when VH were popular. And it isn't the guitar people associate with VH (the videos, concerts, Hit Parader pictures). We have another generation before striped Kramers aren't seen anymore. What he used after that doesn't matter to most people.

Do you like the sound and playability of the Musicman better...or just the looks? I like the looks better for sure. I like the peg head on the Musicman and don’t like the peg head on the EVH. Looks like a bottle opener or something.

Looks and playability. The Music Man (actually any Music Man) has the best feeling neck for me. I use 2 Music Mans as my main guitars (different models, though).

Actually it did. It helped a lot, and people rushed to buy TransTrem-equipped guitars. Prices went up a lot. Try and price something with a TransTrem- it is insane these days, even though it is a wonderful bridge. This is due to EVH's use.

So where are they? I know David Torn used to play one back in the day. I've seen the sum total of two for sale in the last 20 years, and the same guy was getting rid of them.

Like so many things the company disappeared with the "back to the stone age" ethos of the 90s. They were since bought by Gibson, which is notorious for not knowing what to do with their brands; apparently a lot of the old stock ended up with Ed Roman. The prices for vintage Steinbergers are ridiculous these days.

The EVH is nothing original. It's based on Peavey Wolfgang, which is a slight twist of the EB Music Man.

I wonder how the EVH will follow the course of Tele, V, Explorer, etc; from a design everyone scoffs at to one of the most coveted. Solid body electric guitar
was a breakthrough in the 50s. And it has stayed the same ever since.

I think there is a forum out there dedicated to the EVH Wolfgang guitar.

Axis looks better.

Steinberger was indeed bought by Gibson, who ran them into the ground, like they did with Tobias, Opcode, Kramer, and Cakewalk. They occasionally do runs of their Spirit models (approx $400US), but the graphite and TransTrem models are done. Ned Steinberger now runs NS design, but they currently aren't producing a 6 string guitar.

Guess what I found?

A 1990 Ernie Ball Axis with Floyd Rose, quilt top and hard shell case in great condition for $900.

I bought it!

It’s a lot like my Axis from the 90’s that I sold, but that one was a hard tail.

This ‘90 that I just picked up has a Floyd. Never owned a guitar with a Floyd before. Has the D Tuna too.

Spent the day guitar shopping and found a cool guitar for a great price.

You know, the 1 5/8” nut is not that bad. And the price was a steal.

The guitar has a nice quilt top and the finish is kind of a reddish ice tea. Very nice. Reminds me of a violin.

Dimarzios made for Eddie, I think.

Dunno about roasted maple. Looks more like the unfinished neck just got dark from playing..like an old Strat gets.

Some nice Birdseye too.

Back in June 2001, I went to Royal Music in Merrick, NY (now closed) where they had a wall of Peavey Wolfgang’s, and EBMM Axis. The EBMM’s had far nicer wood, sounded better- only reason to like a Peavey was if you HAD to have an arch top- but the Peaveys I felt were ugly in comparison.

I’ve played the EVH Wolfgang’s - the Standard, special, and Wolfgang, and Custom, the bodies felt too small, necks too small, and looks weren’t awe inspiring. I’d prefer a Charvel
