Why isn’t the EVH Wolfgang Signature guitar more popular?

Re: Why isn’t the EVH Wolfgang Signature guitar more popular?

Steinberger was indeed bought by Gibson, who ran them into the ground, like they did with Tobias, Opcode, Kramer, and Cakewalk. They occasionally do runs of their Spirit models (approx $400US), but the graphite and TransTrem models are done. Ned Steinberger now runs NS design, but they currently aren't producing a 6 string guitar.

I wonder what on earth they are thinking. Kramer and Steinberger weren't worth much when they got them, but with decent management they might well have had the positions Charvel and .strandberg* have today; they should have had a head start on both based on brand recognition. Instead, neither company even manages to produce guitars on a regular basis. It is deeply frustrating, because I will admit being emotionally attached to both companies and wanting to see them succeed, yet nothing happens, at the same time as it is proven daily that there would be a market for them if Gibson could get their act together.

Congrats Lew! Not my cup ‘o tea, but the EBMM version is the one to have. The pickups are exclusive to EB and quite good. Don’t sell them if they are not your thing.

Well, I turned 68 in October and have always wanted a guitar with a Floyd Rose but have never owned one.

I doubt I’ll alter this guitar much although I do use the tone control a lot when I’m soloing.

Might add a tone control.

Don’t the new Axis models have both volume and tone?

I doubt that adding a tone control would devalue this ax below what I paid for it.

But for the next few months at least, only changes will be new strings.

i like having a tone control too but i think putting a hole in that will hurt the value unfortunately. nice looking ax though

That's a really nice Axis. I, myself, love the 1 5/8" nut. I grew up playing a 1982 Strat that had that, so it is perfect for me...also, I have smaller hands, too.

I always figured if SRV could use a 1 5/8" neck with his giant gorilla hands, the rest of us mere mortals can manage.

Re: Why isn’t the EVH Wolfgang Signature guitar more popular?

I've actually found that I like to use a 1 9/16" nut on a 1 5/8" neck. The only reason I'd go for anything larger would be if I had to do some sort of sus-ing of the D chord, which gets hard when things are cramped. I'd love to try a proper 1 9/16" neck once, but there aren't many models out there with them.

PS: Nut width discussions would really be a whole lot simpler if you Americans could face the historical necessities and switch to the metric system. :D

Wolfgangs are not popular because they cost three thousand dollars. The only ones who can afford to buy them are blues lawyers.

And because theyre fugly. Does anyone else think the headstock looks like a bottle opener?

One of the great things about being an American is that we don’t have the historical necessity to do anything that the rest of the world does. In fact, let’s be real here… The rest of the world really needs to bend to us.

Besides, it’s just one more way we can show that we’re better because we can think in terms of 12, 8 and 16 instead of trying to go the easy way and sticking to 10!

I remember the great Metrification 'scare' of the late 70s. Seriously, the metric system makes so much more sense. If we switched then, it wouldn't be an issue now.

I stopped needing SAE tools when I stopped buying American cars.

Even now, just print both miles and kilometers on the damn signs and people will eventually learn.

If they had started doing that in the late 70s, we would know by now. The biggest opposition to the metric system here is actually big industry, which killed it last time. Retooling is expensive. And for us, the end user, having 2 sets of tools is expensive.

Yes, US needs metrics desperately...when US was king of manufacturing, the world had to adapt to our ways... With the internet, we are competing against mfgs spread accross the globe, they can provide users what they want and metric is so much faster and easier once u learn it.

Of course change probably won't come from music industry, but its definitely time to catch up while we can.

imho one cool intuition in metric system is that the 1/10 of one meter is about the width of the average male's palm+thumb, or that 1m is about one full step of the adult male.

Oh my the accuracy fails dramatically when you use it that way

Where I work an engineer said that his foot was a size 12
So he laid out equipment by literally stepping it off
Nothing ever fit like he said
We would place it and then have to move everything

I have used my first knuckle to check rough dimensions for an inch
Or my forearm/ hand for 18 inches
Or across the back of my hand for 4 inches

But that's because imperial measurements are based on these dimensions

The metric system is based on something else entirely
And shouldn't be relegated to "rules of thumb"

True, but isn't this something that evolves relatively easily with use?

  • As a kid, I picked up a meter is about a yard, so I immediately knew the length of football fields and that made walking estimates easy-
  • My grand father gave me a 20mm shell (empty;) and it was clear that 20mm's about 3/4 of an inch
  • When I got my first 9mm shell, it was nice to see that it was slightly smaller than 1/2 of 20mm and a little more than 1/3 of an inch
  • And when I started driving, I quickly learned that KPH are a little more than 1/2 of MPH by watching the dual markings on my speedometer.

The bottom line is I developed good reference points for metrics because I was exposed to them and they are totally logical. Once you get a few comparative points in mind, it's easy to extrapolate.

And if we dual measured everything, we would could stop doing the comparisons because we would intuitively know that 200kph has to be way too fast on a US highway;)

And yes, from a guitar measurement POV, it's so much easier to read and convert from a metric tape, but it's a waste of time in the US since parts specs aren't always metric.

the EBMM comes stock with medium jumbo frets. I had mine refretted with the largest I could find- Jescar 57110 frets, and the increased mass/ height makes the neck feel like the nuts is 1 11/16 instead of 1 5/8

The matte black EVH Stealth with creme binding and dual zebras is pure sex...

Any one remember the OLP version of the Axis?
