WHY ? How come Di Marzio pups have a more even EQ thn the SD's ? The SD's have alot more highs and the DM's have alot more bass and mids ? I thought about a DD, Custom or a JB for metal. But after reading the DM sit a Super Distortion, Breed n, Fred, Norton, EVO, EVO2 sound alot better, even the PAF Pro. I dont mean to be a trader butt the DiMarzio pups seem too have much more to offer. Any feedback over this would be great.:13:

A lot of Dimarzio's are designed for tone robbed super strats.
A lot of Duncans are designed for Les Paul types.
There are of course exceptions, like the Custom Custom, Parallel Axis, Invader, Stag Mag, and Bluesbucker, EJ Custom, Air Classic, PAF Classic.
You get the idea.

I went w/ dimarzio at first when I was looking at replacement pups cause I liked the way their EQ charts went. But, as time went on, I discovered that its not too good to put too much creedence into those charts. I would have never tried the full shred based on the tone chart alone, and I love that pickup.

If this based on the Bass, midrange, and treble numerical ratings, then it's really an apples to oranges comparison. I don't think that the two companies tone numbering system can be directly compared to each other. For example, The Pearly Gates has a treble rating number of IIRC 9. This would be a about max brightness it would seem. The PAF pro has a Treble of IIRC 6, but they actually have close to the same treble response, in the same guitar.

It's true that Dimarzio has a few notches covered that others don't. They have a nice diversfied line up, without resorting to a custom shop pickup...ect. However, up until the Virtual Vintage types "most" of their line up was mostly usefull for distorted playing only, though. For example, the Super D sounds terrible clean, and for a long time most new Dimarzio pup's seemed to be designed specifically for distorted shredding ....SIXX said:

You know, it's like Apple & Microsoft - there are two very diffferent approaches to the same thing. Or Fender and Gibson.... I use both brands. There's a time and a place for everything. Overall, though, I prefer Duncan. How do I know this? Well, when I started out looking into pups I played every guitar I could find with one or the other and more. These days you should easily be able to get an idea from a combination of playing production guitars with SD or Dm pups at a guitar store, listening to soundclips (which mostly suck IMO, but give a relative idea) and from reading. Eventually, though, you've just got to take the plunge. I recommend learning how to do it yourself- that takes a lot of cost out of it. And of course, Seymours exchange policy really helps too!

Dimarzio has come up with some inovative design concepts beyond the usual varitions on the vintage humbucker or vintage Fender single coil themes. They have always come up with new designs for superstrat shredders, but recently they have inoavative designs for other guitars, and playing styles as well. For example, they have a soap bar Tone Zone and soap bar Super Distortion. The Bluesbucker, is a really usefull design too, a pickup that looks like a HB but sounds like a soapbar. Seymour has the Phat Cat, and it probably sounds more authentic, but it's not humbucking. Even their takes on vintage sounds use advanced design concepts, such as the Air Classic and virtual PAF's. They have a wide choice of noiseless strat and tele pickups from the virtual vintage to single coil sized Tone Zones.
