Wich Antiquities to buy?

Hi! I've got a MIM Strat with a custom scalloped maple neck with the YJM loaded pickguard. The thing is I got tired of them pretty quickly because I'm playing more bluesy stuff now and I've got a Yamaha Pacifica that has both SSL1's in neck and middle and I absolutely love them. Now I´m looking at the Antiquities and I don't know which ones to buy, Texas Hot or Surfers. The sound I'm in search of is SRV's Nick Johnston's Kenny Wayne Sheperd John Mayer. Thanks and sry for the english!

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

SRV's #1 neck/body was early 60s and pickups were dated 1959, which could be considered underwound by today's standards.

Kenny Wayne has some in his sig Strat custom made (by Fender?), but he also has a lot of vintage Strats

Nick Johnston is using some sign Schecter pickups, with an overwound bridge pup.

sounds a little all over the map. you'll need to factor in the guitar and amp you're using and go from there.

The focus is Srv, mainly his tone in Austin City Limits. Love the sound when he starts soloing in Mary's Had a Little Lamb

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

Fender makes a Pure Vintage '59 Strat Pickup set. you'd think they might know how their stuff from '59 sounded.

Klein, Mojotone, and Amalfitano also make single coils for a similar vibe. some are more pricey than others.

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

I can't see a problem getting them with the Surfers, SSL-1, or the Antiquity Texas Hots. All are capable of getting the SRV sound. I would most likely go for the Antiquity Texas Hots, which might help the fact that I don't use big strings. His sound has as much to do with the amp and how he attacked the guitar, too.

I study a lothe style of SRV and I'm working on the chops constantly. The thing is I play 10-46 on Eb, more to me difficults my playing. I'm worried that with the surfers I'll have to work harder for getting the tone, but at the same time I love that glassy bell-like sound in SSL1's that I think the Surfers are known for. I love raking and hearing the bounce of the strings. Those Srv's covers of Little Wing or Voodoo Child)

Go for the Surfers. They're just like the SSL1's....but better.

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

SSL-1s should be pretty close. What changes do you want from them?

The thing is I've got the SSL1's in the SSH Yamaha, and I want New pickups for my Strat, and I'm willing to pay a little more for the Antiquities if they're that good

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

antiquity surfers. if you want the real vintage type setup then get three neck pups. if you want humcancelling get a rw/rp middle pup. if you arent sure if you can deal with a vintage style bridge pup get the custom surfer bridge. its a little warmer and less bright than the normal model but still stings like a strat bridge should

Seems like everyone loves the Surfers then. The rw/rp favors the quack in positions 2 and 4 right? And I think im going for the custom bridge, i don't like the bridge to be too thin.

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

the surfers are kinda the "perfected" early 60's fender tone. they are on the hotter side of what came out of fender back then which tend to sound best to most people. unless of course they are a guitar player and you tell them the specs :D the custom bridge is not a hot pup at all, it just tames a bit of the highs and is a little thicker sounding than the "neck" version would be in the bridge. i always like putting a tone control on the bridge pup (usually taking it off the middle) so you can warm up the bridge when using overdrive if you want

the texas hots are great pups but dont sound like vintage fender pups to me. too chewy in the mids and spongy on the bass, i love them but they dont scream vintage fender to me.

The Surfers then. When I got them and play the hell out of them I will tell you my thoughts, thank you very much to you all!

Awesome! Sometimes it is difficult to make a decision like this when several pickups could do the job well. You made a great choice.

Go for the Custom bridge.

RW/RP in the middle gives you no hum when the middle pickup is combined with the neck or bridge pickup.

But that is not the way 50's and 60's Strat pickups were wound.

All three would have been identical.

IMO, there is a slight difference in the way the strings ring when I've compared the sound of my Strats with a RW/RP middle pickup and without.

Without, it just sounds a little more like a 50's or 60's Strat.

But it's nice to not have that hum in the #2 and #4 switch positions too.

Re: Wich Antiquities to buy?

I have a bunch of G&L Legacys. Some of the older ones have Duncan SSL-2s, while the newer ones use the G&L CLF-100s, both with a RW/RP middle pickups. These are flat-pole pickups.

Two of them now have Texas Hot Antiquity sets, both with the Power Bridge pickup and the RW/RP middle. Both guitars are ash bodies and maple necks. Both use the the factory PTB tone controls with global Bass and Treble.

I like the standard pickups just fine...anybody can see how versatile a Strat is: from Buddy Merrill (who played with Lawrence Welk!) to Eric, to Stevie Ray, to Nile Rodgers of Chic to Yngwie...Strats rock! I wouldn't want to live without those great vintage tones, even though some might find them thin. And I have three other G&L "strat" models that use different sounding pickups. The S-500s and Comanches use Leo Fender designed MFD pickups that are really powerful, wide range pickups. The Comanche Z-Coils are humbucking. And the Legacy Specials use a Gotoh Dual Blade pickup that nudges the tone close to PAF tonality with power and thickness.

The Texas Hots give me a fifth tone, and I LOVE these pickups! Not giving up my stock Legacys, mind you, but very cool tones. It's a thicker tone than the CLF-100s, hotter...rounder, not as much air or stringiness. The S-500 MFDs have much more power than the Ants...more etched, more size in the top-end and more solid in the bass. Still very much a single coil sound...just be careful...they'll rip your face off an leave you bleeding! The Comanche Z-Coil MFDs sound very much like the SC version, but they are humbucking and so the top-end is just slightly curtailed.

The warmth of the Texas Hots is seductive, addictive. The warmth and fullness is a great contrast to the vintage alnicos. A little less quack in 2 and 4...but it's still Stratty. Awesome neck pickup...you could do a jazz gig with this. Blues? Hell yeah! The The extra power of the hotter bridge pickup is welcome...it rocks, while losing some of the ice-pickiness. And aside from 2 and 4--I actually USE the middle pickup! Holy cow!

I can't choose for you, but don't dismiss the Texas Hots too easily. They are great pickups.
