Wilkinson bridges

Can someone give me some history behind the Wilkinson bridge? It seems to be a bit of a generic term and a lot of companies make derivatives of them.

Thanks.

Re: Wilkinson bridges

Basically what i'm looking for is this, only for Wilkinson:

Floyd Rose invented the Floyd Rose bridge. The main versions are the Original and the Pro. There are other versions at different price points. They are the 1000 series, the Special, and so on.

He licensed the design, so many companies make slightly differing versions of the OFR. Schaller, Gotoh, and now Floyd Rose themselves make FR bridges.

The main differences between FR bridges are...

And so on.

Re: Wilkinson bridges

The "original" Wilkinson is the VS100 model, but they have been produced by many companies over the years.

If you want the best quality Wilkinson you can buy, you need to seek out the ones stamped "Wilkinson by Gotoh". Those are made in Japan by Gotoh and include certain 100 to 400 series models (link)

Carvin had their own version of the Wilkinson 100 for many years, but the Gotoh models had much better finished knife edges (I've posted about this in the past)

All the others (mostly 50 series) are Korean or Chinese made and generally use lower quality materials.

Re: Wilkinson bridges

The original VS100 was made in USA and included a mechanism for "locking" the end of the vibrato arm against a ferrule in the spring cavity cover plate. (A dubious feature that I soon removed.) The rest of my VS100 is still on the Bitsacaster that I assembled in 1995. Still works.

Re: Wilkinson bridges

The modern Wilkie 5+1 Strat vintage type bridge is a good bridge, MIK I think. It has the USA mounting spacing ( 2 and 7/32's?), but it has the 2 and 1/8" string spacing, which is a narrow spacing compared to a vintage spec bridge. For some instances, the narrow spacing works out, but in general I do not like it. You can get the Wilkinson 5+1 with a steel block, or non steel high mass block , which the non steel is less expensive

The problem I have with these and all, even Callaham bridges, is the saddle screws; they end up wobbling in the saddle (and I dont think the saddle is the problem , but not certain) which makes messing with the saddle hight problematic, and cuases tuning issues, but you can buy best quality aftermarket stainless saddle screws that mitigate or fix that issue .
