Will 5 watts drive 4x12?

Re: Will 5 watts drive 4x12?

I think it could, but I don't know.. As far as I remember, I've seen the z-vex nano head drive a cabinet, and it's only 0,5 watts (or 1 watt), if I remember right.

Yeah, 5 watts will run a 4x12. The zvex is 1/2 a watt and it drives a 4x12 just fine. It won't be super loud or clean, but is usable in the studio or in a stage situation with a less loud group or with a PA.

Thanks.

I was thinking just studio use to get that sound of a 4x12 cabinet at low volumes.

Re: Will 5 watts drive 4x12?

I've run SF Champs and a Crate V508 into a Marshall 1960A with good results.

Re: Will 5 watts drive 4x12?

It'll work...but some single 6V6 5 watt amps ( like the Fender Champ or Princeton) want to see 4 ohms and use a 4 ohm speaker. Most Marshall bottems are 16 ohm.

The speaker out from the Epiphone is 8 ohm - any suggestions on reasonably priced cabs?

Re: Will 5 watts drive 4x12?

When Guitar Player reviewed the little Epiphone tube amps recently, there only real complaint was the speaker. In fact, the major deficiency with many low-watt combos is the small (or too few) speakers. Running a small amp through a big cab is a great way to get big-amp tone at reasonable volume.

Just use two 4x12's!

Their 2x12 V30/G12H30 Special is probably the best tone/dollar deal on the planet.

Re: Will 5 watts drive 4x12?

I've run a 4x12 from a Smokey! It's actually loud enough for home practice, but definitely will run out of steam if a live drummer were playing.

Just curious for anyone who knows. Will my Epiphone 5 watt Valve Special drive a 4x12 cabinet? ...

Easily, and probably still louder that you´ll want in a non-band setting ;)

1 Watt sure will:

I didn't know Lemurs prefered the Smokey, too! :)
Unfortunately, I can't claim that one (other than that I was the one who snapped the picture). It's Luke's.

But who doesn't like a lil smokey now and then?
