Will a noise gate pedal eliminate single coil hum?

Will a noise gate pedal eliminate single coil hum? And if so, which pedal would you recommend?

A noise gate just stops noise in between notes. It is like a compressor you set the minimum level at which the gate opens and the minimum level at which the gate closes. It sounds like turning the volume off. But it doesn't do anything to clean the signal. I don't care for them much beacuse they sound choppy you get a wierd breathing effect.

If you have lots of money, I think a Rocktron HUSH would do the trick...
