Will a ORiginal Floyd fit straight into a Ibanez Edge?

Ok i am thinking about upgrading a trem on my ibanez guitar.
so i was thinking of retiring the Ibanez Edge it has ( it is an old roadstar 2 guitar with an original Edge trem) and putting on a Original Floyd hoping to beef up the tone.

i think that the Edge trem is made of potted zinc or something, you can actually put a grove in it if you put a screwdriver to the block. you know what i mean? if you try and scratch the trem block on the Edge it will put a shallow groove in it. unlike my Callaham trem which will just scratch it cause it is pure steel.

so i wanted to ask if anyone knows will it be real tough for me to change trems? will the floyd fit right in or will i have to fill up the old pivot screws and drill new ones for the floyd?

hmmm....i dont know for sure but my guess would be that you would have to redrill for the pivot screws or something else. Ibanez probably made their tremelos so that you can't directly replace them. Your best bet would be to buy a floyd from a place with a good returns policy and if it doesnt fit then send it back.

Yes it will. I just put a Floyd Rose Pro in my RG570 (the low profile version, like the Lo Pro Edge), replacing the original Edge. The posts line up fine. My only complaint is the recess route for the Edge is very big, there's too much room cosmetically, but as far as functional use, yes, it will fit fine.

Interestingly, the Edge and Original Floyd seem to weigh the same, though the original Floyd is much smaller, leading me to beleive it's made of heavier steel.

P.S.- one thing- Original Floyds have 2 different size blocks- 42 mm and 38. The 42 mm block is for standard mount, the 38 mm is for a recessed route. If you use a 42 mm block on a recessed route the block will stick out the back and you won't be able to mount yoru cover plate. If you get the wrong size block, just call Floyd Rose, they'll send you the correct one for about $6.

so did you change the pivots and put in the floyd ones or could you use the Edge ones and put in the Floyd?

did you see a good improvement in tone from the change??

i think that the ibanez trems are crap.

what is the guitar made of. mine is basswood

It might, but I can't see why you'd want to. The original Edge is touted as one of the best Floyd bridges out there, some even prefer them OVER the OG Floyd Rose.

EDIT: Of course if something is wrong with the bridge, like the knife edges are out, I can better understand it :).

Does the Floyd Rose pro have the same dimensions as the OFR?

I seem to prefer the original to the ibanez. Good to know that i can switch the ibanez out! MIght have to do that one day....

well i always wondered about that people think that the ibanez ones are really good.

they are not made from steel that is for sure and i think that they dont sustain well and thin out the sound.

just my opinion.

fretboard radius isn't an issue, the saddles can be shimmed. From what I recall, Ibanez FR's are die cast where OFR's are solid steel. I tend to agree with the above. An OFR will work just fine but the recess route will be a little larger if you're using an edge or similar. That's just a cosmetic issue. I don't see any problems.

The different tone is most likely that your RG is Basswood (most of them are).

The OFR will fit properly, and since your Roadstar is most likely not a recessed route, you don't have to worry about how big the route is or that fact that the arm side of the OFR is wider...

I love the Edge Trem and I will gladly pay for shipping if you want to give away the one you're replacing...

The Callaham trem adds a LOT to the tone of your USACG too, their blocks for one are solid cold-rolled steel, high high quality stuff. I highly doubt switching to an OFR on your Ibanez will thicken it up enough to compete with a mahogany/Callaham combination.

no my Edge trem is not recessed

here is a pic of it so you can see.
if you look hard enough you can see where i put a block of wood underneath the trem so it sounds better. by the way, it sounds waaaaaaay better like this, that just ancoring it to the body.

i know that my ibanez even if i put an OFR on it wont sound as thick and nice as my USACG with the Callaham ( i have way to good parts on that sucker)
i just want to make a noticable upgrade cause the way it is now it doesnt sustain well and the sound is more edgy thin.

by the way Callahams are the best! and the guy is a real treat to communicate with. Cheap too if you ask me, for what you are getting. the trems are a work of art

You have to use the Ibanez posts. The posts that come with an original Floyd are smaller than the Ibanez posts, meaning that in order to use them you'd have to take out the original Ibanez posts, plug the holes with dowles, and re-drill the holes to fit the smaller diameter Floyd posts. It can be done, and the Floyd posts are better (they're hardened steel, Ibanez are brass), but it's something a professional lutheir would have to do, then there's the issue of re-painting the area after the plugs are in.

As far as tone, I gutted the whole guitar and also added a JB/Jazz combo, blocked the trem to only go down (non-floating), and replaced all the electronics with CTS pots and a megaswitch. I also put a fathead on the headstock. Seems to have eliminated the thin tone, the guitar sounds better than my Music man Axis, but not as thick as my Les Paul
