Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

So I'm looking at guitar center to do a complete rewiring of a Strat that I have (It's a fancy HH superswitch type deal that's way above my soldering skill level) and I was wondering if they could do a Kinman type treble bleed of a 220k resistor in series with a .001 capacitor. Do you think that they will have those parts on hand or is it better for me to do it myself when I get it back? I don't want to have all those extra components if I'm only going to do this mod once. I usually do 50's wiring, but I tried a guitar with the Kinman treble bleed so I decided I'll give it a try.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

It's the closest, I've got another store called pickers supply, but it's a bit further out of the way.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

Guitar Center has to have some decent techs in some stores. But, they definitely have some hacks in some too. I wouldn't condemn them all but I sure as hell wouldn't blanket recommend Guitar Center. Seems to be pretty much hit or miss. See if you can find some info about your store and the tech. If you cant, or it's not positive and you know for sure that Pickers Supply is ... drive.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

The complexity of the diagram doesn't change the difficulty of soldering.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

I wanted to know if they had the specific cap and resistor, not whether or not they are able to. I might just call them up and see, that's probably the easiest thing.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

Especially if you have a specific formula you want to use... I currently have a list on my computer of about 8 combinations that various people have proclaimed "the best".

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

I'm with Darg, I won't make blanket statements about techs at all GCs, but, I've seen enough of how they handle other things to make me a little suspicious. Have you tried a google search for "luthier" or "guitar repair" in your area? Most of the best guitar "techs" aren't necessarily associated with a specific store.

Guitar Center (or as I refer to it - Ninth Circle of Hell Music) is NOT customer service oriented. The clown at the one here in town keeps me in work, fixing all his screw-ups (and he graduated from a luthier school).

Sounds like you have heaps of knowledge have you got any builds under your belt or mostly repair stuff? I am always keen to check out other peoples work for inspiration.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

They should be able to do it. Hit them with questions and show them a diagram. Ask your friends if anyone has ever had something installed there. I am sure there are some good techs at GC, but in my town, the good ones run their own shops.

40 years at the bench. I was a Gibson and Fender authorized tech for a big music store for many years. Retired awhile back, and now work out of my home at my own pace. Yes, have built plenty of electric stuff from scratch for local clients. Wrote for many years for American Lutherie, Guitarmaker, and Stringed Instrument Craftsman. Trained a couple apprentices over the years - none had the "stick to it" to make it all the way. If you wish to know more, I post over on the Official Luthiers' Forum under my own name.

Do a thread and post some pics up of your builds i would love to see them. Thanks.

Here's some old shots from my PhotoBucket account. Keep in mind, back when I started I wasn't taking pix of everything... I was busy running a 3 man shop in a big music store.

Anyway - first up is a custom hollowbody I built for a local jazzer in 1993. To this day, it's the only axe he has. Pix get older as you scroll through - should be about 20 or so. And the end is a tobacco burst LP I completely rebuilt after it was destroyed in a fire - all new plastic parts and hardware, total refinish. Cost more than a new LP back in the 80's when I did that, but it was a sentimental piece for the client. There's one of me holding a custom Strat and a harp guitar. The harp guitar was a basket case in parts when I got it - a one family instrument! Put it all back together so the guitar neck could be played, anyway. The rest is happy clients, one of my apprentices hard at work, the shop walls and busy bench, some refinishes, my shop sign outside the door, and a furry pal. The archtop was a complete rebuild from parts - a 30's Gretsch. You'll find more stuff before and after, but the 20 are the years at the store. The oldest build - the brown LP, which the original owner still plays to this day. Built that one in '79 maybe? ENJOY.

I don't know any of us that would value such odd knowledge as the continual electrical component inventory levels of various GC's in America.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

Guitar Center techs are not GC employees. They are independent contractors who rent space at GC. That's why you can't use your GC credit card to pay them. I've never had a problem with them but I also suspect that GC won't volunteer to take responsibility if the tech screws up your guitar. Each has their own thing going and all you can do is try to get some references and ask each one individually what they can and cannot do.

That blue one is cool and different thanks for showing me.

Re: Will Guitar Center install treble bleeds?

Theyre tards... look on craigslist or ask around for a less incompetent local tech
