As for the tone, I'd just move up to a slightly beefier sounding pickup, but for playability, I just like 11's on guitars with shorter scales or ones that are tuned down half a step or more. For awhile, I used nothing but 11's on all guitars, and my left hand's strength improved, my feel, and my tone improved. The problem is that my right hand started to get too heavy handed, and I was playing a lot tougher.
That caused me to start breaking more strings and losing some of the delicate nuances in my playing. I had to back down to 10's on strat scale guitars for that reason. For LP's, I really only like 11's now. And you may have to run some folded sandpaper through your slots to widen them before you go up one gauge. No need to have a luthier reslot them, if you can do it yourself with fine grain sandpaper.
