How about these for 80's hair metal modded JCM 800?

JCM 900 dual reverb
JCM 900 SLX
Late 80;s jcm 800 with channel switching
SIlver Jubilee

any others?

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

The jcm 900slx is definitely a modded jcm 800. It works even better cause it doesn't require the master volume be turned up to get distortion. I think the slx will provide you more than enough distortion for some modern tones. The slx is part the series called the "Hi Gain Master Volume", there is another version of this amp but it just called jcm 900 and its the same amp with one less preamp tube. I think this version would provide you with more a jcm 800 tone because it has less distortion. For both versions I suggest you get them with only el-34s.

The jcm900 dual reverbs are supposedly totally different from the jcm800 sound. The silver jubliee is like the jcm800 just modded for more gain I think.

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

The Dual Reverbs can with a push from an overdrive.
The SL-X most definitely.
The predecessor of the SL-X, the MkIII Hi Gain Master Volume, nails the tone as well.
Those channel switchers from the 80's will too, with an OD.
The Silver Jubilee I haven't played through in a long time but I believe it will do the job too.

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

thanks. I may look for some MKIII's or SLX's since I do not want to use a pedal since it adds noise. Of course I am still listening to suggestions

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

If it helps, I use an OD pedal with my MkIII. I have the gain sensitivity set at about half-way, sometimes all the way down, but the pre-amp volume up full. This gives me a somewhat "clean" tone when I need it.

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

that is a neat idea Erik. I listen to your clips with that amp. Are you useing and overdrive or is it all marshall?

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

Splawn amps will give you the total modded 80s Marshall tone, but with better sound quality, better parts, as well as having the warranty and reliability of a brand new amp. Price-wise, they are competetive with a new JCM800.

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

Sell off the noisy amp and add your $1k to that ... it will be money well-spent!

Gearjonser was very helpful when I was looking at a new amp, b/c I had owned 3 that were all very good, but none of them PERFECT. He urged me not to compromise, sell off everything, and invest in that one perfect amp. For me, it was the Splawn Quick Rod. I think that was great advice, so I'm passing it along to you. :)

Some are all Marshall and some have an overdrive on. If you listened to the ones on Marshall MkIII page on my site, the first 3 are all Marshall, the last one has an overdrive on, the Wylde Overdrive to be exact.

Thanks. It's hard to think that I almost sold it a few years ago. I'm glad I didn't. I want another one too, but the 2500 model, and a 2501 or 2502 combo.

JCM 900 dual reverb - nope
JCM 900 SLX - DEFINITELY not
Late 80;s jcm 800 with channel switching - if you have it modded, yes
SIlver Jubilee - IMO no

any others?
If you want a Modded JCM 800, then you may want to look into buying one and having it modded, or buuying one that´s already been modded, or the offerings from numerous boutique manufacturers such as Splawn, Voodoo or of course the almighty Bogner ;)

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

A lot of the modded Marshall 800's had severe noise problems. Marshall's own takes on a modded 800, are usually comparitively quiet, and better excuted, even if the gain isn't totally maxxed. IMO, the SLX doesn't get the due it deserves. It's the best of the 900's, particularly with EL34's, IMHO.

The Jubilee has more of a classic rock voicing.

You could also look into used Soldano Hotrod 50's and the like. These amps have the modded 800 vibe and may be fairly reasonably priced, used.

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

An 80s Laney AOR 50 or 100 is essientially a juiced 800 circuit that is still an absurd bargain. I got mone for 200.00, usually 300 to 400.00 now. Killer amps on the cheap.

Re: Will these amps give me modded JCM 800?

How about half a grand for a Yamaha T50 or T100? They were designed by Mike Soldano, someone who knows a thing or two about modded Marshalls. ;)

I had a T100 and it excelled at 80s metal.
