Will this fit?

I am thing of purchasing a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup and I own an Ibanez RG170 R and I'm not sure if the pickups will fit. I have never had experience changing pickups but I know I have seen these on Fender Strats, but will it fit mine? Here is a link to the set I'm going to purchase:

Re: Will this fit?

Also, I am going for the Blink 182 tone. I know TOm DeLonge uses this as his signature pick-up right?

Re: Will this fit?

yes, he used this pup in his strats, but my honest opinion is that his tone came more from his amps than his pup. marshall for his clean (low gain on the distortion channel) and mesa for his dirty.

Re: Will this fit?

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. But I looked at the Mesa Boogie amps and the Marshall JCM 900 and they are 3000$ for both. :(. But are the invaders better than the stock ones that come with the Ibanez Rg 170R? Is it worth paying that much? And will it change the sound tremendesly? Oh, and my guitar has began to loose it's stuff, like it doesn't sound like it used to. Is this the pickups? This is one of the main reasons I am changing them. Can someone answer those 3 questions please? :newangel:

Re: Will this fit?

I went to the Ibanez home-site and it's specs were this:

PSND1 (H) Neck PU

PSNDS (S) Mid PU

PSND2 (H) Bridge PU

I've never heard of this...is this a brand?

Re: Will this fit?

in my opinion, the powersound singles are usable but the humbuckers are bad. no matter what pup you replace it with will sound better ... they are that bad.

Re: Will this fit?

OK i have an RG with an Invader, and i use it to get a Tom Delonge tone when i play a few blink covers, so i guess im the man to answer your questions! (nice to feel wanted)

I had different stock ibanez pickups (i had a V8) But the Invader definately improved my tone, it is easy to get the tom delonge sound out of with gain set about half way, or sometimes a little more to sound a bit rawer, its a great thick sounding meaty pickup. I got my pickup ordered and fitted through my local shop, but it fits fine, although the polepieces are not directly lined under the strings (perhaps because of the floyd rose) but this doesnt seem to interefere with what i consider to be a perfect punk tone.

The first link you gave showed a set of 2 Invaders (presumably a neck and a bridge), and the second link was just a bridge pickup (shown by the B after the name).

I would definately recommend this for the sound you want, it gives a great sound for powerchords, palm muting and pickslides, which is what i expect you want if you wish to sound like Tom delonge.

You say your guitar is 'loosing its stuff' (i presume you are talking about its tonal qualities or output) i would be very surprised if this IS the pickups and would suggest you solve this problem before replacing pickups, but nevertheless the outlay for the pickups is DEFINATELY worth it and WILL make a difference.

Feel free to ask more questions if you are still unsure.

Re: Will this fit?

I knew that one was a set, that's no what I was questioning....what I meant was one of them (the second one) says
Seymour Duncan SH-8b Invader

What's the difference between the 2? And you said you had to take it to the shop to get it fitted? So it won't fit? I'll have t ake it to the shop? And HOW do they fit it? And hopw much did it cost you to get them to fit it? Lol....I know it's alot of questions but you said "Feel free to ask more questions if you are still unsure." and I want you to feel needed ;)

Re: Will this fit?

my theory on your guitar "losing it's stuff" is that your ears got used to the tone and you've grown out of the sound you are getting now. try it with a friend's amp or bring it to a guitar shop like you are testing amps. it may bring new life to your guitar. but if you want delonge's tone definitely start with the pickup. there are modeling amps you can tweak to get his tone.

SH-8b is simply the bridge Invader's full name, it is the same as just saying invader. I got it fitted at the shop because i dont know much about fitting pickups, not because it didnt fit, in fact it appears to fit well (apart from the slight polepieces misalignement that ive already said). You dont have to take it to the shop, it is apparently easy to fit pickups, but i am not very handy with a solder iron, and they purchased it, fitted it and set up my guitar with new strings for about £115. They fit it by unscrewing your current pickups, unsoldering the wires from the pick up switch and earths, and then soldering the invader back in its place, apparently a simple operation, but i still wanted a proffesional to do it, as i am by no means an expert in any of this.

Again feel free to keep asking, this is how we learn! :)

Re: Will this fit?

You have to solder the pick-up itself into place? And abpout soldering the wires.....could you just splice them and twist them together onto the new pickups? (i have NO experience) Does anyone know?

Re: Will this fit?

the pickup will screw onto the mounting ring, it comes with screws and springs. once you remove the old one you'll see what i mean. soldering the wires will work better, cleaner connections, etc. here is the link to the wiring diagram for your guitar:

http://www.ibanez.com/wiring/wire.asp?y=2002&w=RG170

on the bridge humbucker, put the black from the invader where the white wire is from your old pup. the green and shield (invader) go to the volume pot (follow the lines) and the red and white (invader) go together and placed in the spot left vacant by the red wire from the old pickup.

hope this helps.

PS. if you don't feel confortable doing it, definitely bring it to a guitar shop!!!

Re: Will this fit?

I went there and it had model numbers at the bottom that it suported. And it had RG 170 and RG 170D, but I didn't see RG 170R is it the same???

Re: Will this fit?

yes, the letters are simply a revision number ... the changes could be anything, even what size screws to use. the wiring is all the same.

You probably know this but just to clear up, this WAS his signature pup, (from enema to t.o.y.p.a.j, and in all tours inbetween). I believe (correct me if im wrong) he used a strat (dunno what pups) for cheshire and Buddah, A gibson Les Paul (stock i think) for most of Dude Ranch, his sig strat (with Invader) for enema and t.o.y.p.a.j and his new gibson (with dirty fingers) for the latest 'untitled' album.

But still this pickup does offer tones that covers most of thier stuff easily.

EDIT: Also used the signature strat on the mark tom and travis show live album.
