Winged C Tubes...opinions?

Re: Winged C Tubes...opinions?

The "correct" SED tubes are marketed under the Winged C logo, and the New Sensor under the Svetlana name.

Look for the Winged =C= logo, and "Made in St Petersburg Russia"

The tubes at the local shop are definitely the correct Winged C tubes because they have the logo and the "made in" tag. I just don't know if I want to drop that much money on tubes yet.

Re: Winged C Tubes...opinions?

I think he quoted me $120 for the set of 4? I can't recall exactly but I think that was it.

$120 for a matched quad is about right. Someone was having a pre Christmas sale for $99 I think, but $120-$140 seems to be the going rate.

The Tung Sol or even JJs are also good alternatives for a nice EL34.

Re: Winged C Tubes...opinions?

I was given some of the correct winged C EL34 by a family friend when I had my Stiletto Ace. They sounded really lush and warm in that amp, and mellowed out the tone a little bit when pushing heavy gain. Sounded good.

Re: Winged C Tubes...opinions?

In the UK its ~£50 for a pair. I cant sell them on at £20. Heck i can't even give them away people don't want them that much

Re: Winged C Tubes...opinions?

Back in my hometown, I was using a 1979 180 watter"sextet-tube" super twin reverb with quad Winged-C 6L6GC, and a duet Winged-C for my combo 1982 50 watter JCM800.

Both has never failed me in the sound which I wanted all along. I ran them stereo through a Ernie ball volume pedal.

I also have a half stack 100 watter single channel Mark 2 1987 Marshall JCM800 with JJ tubes.
The JJ tubes were new when I acquired the amp, so I decided to use them for a while before changing them to Wing C.
Comparatively the JJ didn't sound "aggressive" enough compared to the Wing-C but it gave me a different feel.

I'm a rock and blues player, sometimes if situation forces me, I would play contemporary or R&B at gigs. The JJ would help in that sense somehow.

My current Mesa Electra dyne is equipped with original Mesa tubes. I heard its by Mullard.
I couldn't blast the amp here, but I'm running it through an attenuator. Although I very much desire to
change the tubes to SEDs but I doubt I can hear the characteristic difference at low volumes. So I will leave it as it is and probably get the original tubes when its time for a tube change since its cheaper.

But overall I'm a SED Wing-C fan.

Re: Winged C Tubes...opinions?

Hey put it this way. I was bored one day and wanted to try the JJ's and Winged C SED's back to back. When I put the JJ's back in, they sounded so flat & dull. No punch. Very little harmonics. When I put the C's back in....the tone was back. I think maybe some of you guys with bad experiences with these tubes have some of the new Svetlana tubes. The only tubes I have ever used & really liked that weren't NOS or good condition old glass were the =C='s. They kick ass.
