Wireless guitar rigs...educate me please.

Don't know much about wireless guitar setups so I thought I'd start asking questions before I go about getting one which might be in the near future.

Just wondering what to look for and if there is a real standout one to look for. If they suck tone, if they don't suck tone, if some do and some don't...and just any info anyone has on them really.

Rock on guys!

Re: Wireless guitar rigs...educate me please.

I don't have experience with the super expensive, $1000+ units, but my Shure PGX system works pretty well.

I paid about $300 for it on eBay. 99 channels to choose from, good battery life, great range, crystal clear signal. The only thing is that it seems the input gain drops a bit when I use it, like the guitar's volume knob is rolled off just a tad. It's really not that big of a deal, but I notice it slightly because I play with lots of gain. I've ordered a Radial Dragster and that's supposed to fix the problem completely...

I think with any wireless system you're bound to get some degree of tone loss, but like I said I don't have experience with the really expensive units. Chances are those are perfect. Robert S. was saying how he has I think the Shure SLX and IIRC he said it sounds just like being plugged in with a cable.

The bottom line is, with wireless, you usually get what you pay for.

Nady UHF 10. Got one for 80 on ebay used and it's never ever cut out or sucked tone. Everyone in my band uses one.

Re: Wireless guitar rigs...educate me please.

I had a Nady UHF-4 and well... let's just say that turned me off their products completely. Did you just happen to find the UHF-10 on eBay? I don't see any info on their site.

Overall, I would say go Shure or Sennheiser.

I'm sure things have really changed in 15 years- but I hated all the systems I tried back then. I decided I was happy enough with a cable.

Re: Wireless guitar rigs...educate me please.

I think wireless audio systems have come along way. I see many big performances (LIVE EARTH being one) that are almost completely wireless. All the mics (at least vocal) are wireless and many guitarist have wireless set ups and it doesnt sound bad to me.

this is what me and my band mates use:

the ew172 G2 system is a good reliable set up... there are 4 in our band.. 2 x guitar, 1 x bass and the vocal mike. We've never had any problems in the 18 months or so we've been using them, and I have A/B'd them with a good quality lead and can't say I notice much if any difference in tone. The bonus is that you can adjust the input gain to drive your valve amp a bit harder if you want to, I think it goes from +/- 18dB... though I leave mine at 0dB. We tend to go walkabout which is cool... I guess the furthest I've been so far is about 25/30 mtrs (100 feet ish) without any drop outs or anything. I just make sure I use fresh batterys every gig.

I can, would and have recommended these units to many players and not one has been disappointed. Yes they are a bit pricey, but you do get what you pay for.

I'm with you on that part. My singer uses a uhf4 handheld which is semi good. The UHF10 is nothing like it though. It's a discontinued model. Be smart and check it out. 3 touring musicians are recommending this on my end. They have yet to do anything bad.

Re: Wireless guitar rigs...educate me please.

I use a $300 Audio Technica system I bought at guitar center.

Great system. No drop outs. The system creates no noise whatsoever. I do not notice any perceptable change in tone when switching between a cable and wireless. The best $300 bucks I ever spent. Its probably about 5 years old now and I have not experienced 1 single problem.

Re: Wireless guitar rigs...educate me please.

I have no personal experience with them, but a friend just got the Sennheiser after playing through one, and this was a guy who swore every wireless unit sucked tone.

THAT'S TRUE.

Though I'm sure it's extremely expensive, I know that Prince uses a wireless system that is actually installed into the pickup system of the guitar, so there's nothing in the input jack at all. It's just straight from the pickups to the transmitter. Seems pretty cool.
